Johannesburg - Three men were arrested on Wednesday following a chase through the Mohlakeng settlement near Randfontein, Gauteng police said.
Captain Appel Ernst said police spotted a suspicious vehicle on the Brandvlei road at around 08:00 on Wednesday.
When officers tried to stop the vehicle it sped off. Police gave chase, during which one of the occupants opened fire on police.
Another police vehicle blocked off the road near Mohlakeng. The men in the car shot at this vehicle too before fleeing into Extension 7 of Mohlakeng.
Here the men abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot. The fugitives got into another car waiting for them in a back road and drove off. Again police gave chase, during which two police vehicles collided causing one to overturn.
A police officer and a pedestrian were seriously injured in the accident and were stabilised on scene before being taken to a local hospital.
Police followed and arrested three men on a charge of attempted murder. Four more men were still being sought.
Around the area where the men abandoned their vehicle police recovered two pistols. The car was also positively linked to a case of robbery in Kagiso.
