I paid a hospital account in cash, which the medical aid also paid, so now they need to refund me. Since I paid by credit card, they want to pay it back into the same account. However, they insist I need to fill in the 3 magic numbers on the back of the credit card and just scan and mail it back to them. I find this incredibly insecure and refuse to risk the potential fraud.

So my questions is, do companies really need this 3 digit code to make a payment into the credit card account?

I seriously doubt it.

Tell them to rather pay it into your current account. Or ask them if you can take teh card to the hospital for them to swipe a refund on their speedpoint machine.

No they don't. I don't need it to pay money into any credit card account I want to. That code is ver verifaction for paying, not receiving money.

Tell them to take a hike - your CVV number should not be written down anywhere, or saved to any location that is not encrypted.

There is no way they need those numbers for you to receive money, all they need is the card number, bank and type of account. Just leave it blank and send it.

On a related yet off-topic note - the Cell C store in cresta tried to photocopy the back of my credit and debit cards when I opened a contract there. (I didn't let them, but how many people fall for it? They wanted me to just give them the cards, so I refused and followed them to the photocopier. When he tried to take copies of the backs I refused point blank)

Just bull**** them and tell them that the bank says they don't require the CVV number for refunds

LOL and I bet the guy who was doing the photocopying was not even aware of the implications of what they are actually doing

I read somewhere (I think it was actually here on MyBB) that some guys scratch the CVV number of the card and save it in a secure location. I think thatis a brilliant idea and I think I may actually do this with my cards.

BS

They only need your card number, not even the expirey date, or bank, or card type. I make payments from Capitec to my Nedbank CC and I've only ever had to enter in the card number.

I would escalate this to a manager at Discovery as it really seems that this particular employee could be trying to scam you of you CC details

Anybody who asks for a copy of my card gets reported to Mastercard. They have always been helpful in the past with misbehaving merchants...

ISP Cash Cow - good advice!

Remove the CVV security code from the back of your credit card. I have seen an increase in retail shops writing down the CVV number when you pay with CC, with Computer Stores leading the pack.

What does Discovery have to do with this?

You realise there are actually other medical aids, right...

I'm sure it's the hospital wanting to do the refund, not the med aid.

Yea, I have mine scratched off and stored at home. No one will really know what it is..
