Hi

I was just considering an idea...

If I were to setup 3 hotspots each at separate block of flats ( legal coz it doesnt cross roads etc :) ), each block would have its own adsl line ( got a friends wif adsl that lives in block ), would it be legal if I connected all 3 via a Wlan so that I can use 1 server to run them all?

The adsl is used within the same boundary but I'm consernced because the server crosses boundaries..!

Any tips would be great!

What type of server are you going to be using ?

Why would you want to link the three via wifi if they already have individual ADSL lines ?
A full blown server is a bit of overkill to manage three hotspots isnt it ?
What type of software are you going to be using to manage them ?

I dont usually give advice to ppls that are using it for commercial gain but in this case ill give you one tip.

GET SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING!

Guys it woz just an idea

Setsquare, does Telkom know what they are doin?

what are you wanting to do the server, do you just want to link the three spots into a single network

I have a few friends each with their own adsl line and they all live in a block of flats.... I thought it would be a great idea to setup a hotspot at each block of flats....

Yes all 3 hotspots on 1 network

I have a server PC at home and I thought that it would be economical logical if I could use the same server pc to monitor all 3 hotspots, right?

I just need to keep record of the amount of traffic each user uses..hence server pc

If there is another way of monitoring all 3 hotspots without server then let me know!

Thanks

BTW setsquare, Telkom started small and grew 2 wot is is now!! :)

A VANS license does not allow you to provide your own connectivity. It allows you to provide Value Added Network Services (VANS...) on any Legal telecommunications Infrastructure.

It does not make your own Infrastructure legal.

OK no need to hash out old topics. Technically VANS dont even exist in this country anymore. I am sure if the chap who started this topic has not done anything by now he never will anyway.

So if a VAN's doesn't exist that means anyone with a wifi router & ADSL connection could sell internet. I can't imagine they'll get away without some sort of licence?

So how would a person provide connectivity on their own infrastructure...legally

Use mikrotik routersoft as mentioned in this post it also has some software you can download from their site called "The Dude" and another "IP monitor used for traffic monitoring per IP so off ye go and do the NIKE thing, Oh yeah the Mikrotik routersoft (which is a LINUX app - Don't worry rediculously easy to set up and if you have issues google it :) ) will cost you about R 650.00 for a level 3 license which includes everything you need to set up multiple hot spots with firewalls routing and everything a CISCO freaks heart would desire for a 100th of the price :)
