Sure the meanings can and do change. Nice from the Latin nescius (ignorant) once meant timid, then fastidious, then careful, then agreeable. The foolish you cite is from fool (infant, child), and morphed to silly, ignorant, idiot, madman, jester, buffoon.

However, the above usage of Apocalypse (to denote a cataclysmic event) is modern and has no evolutionary history. It's based on an error arising from ignorance of sacred scripture, a distinctly modern malady.
