30% import duty on electronics from Amazon

Yep so the calculation should be:

Item cost: $197.99
Shipping cost: $26.09
Tax (calculation below): $96.13032
Total: $320.21032

As I said, additionally most companies charge a "handling" fee. $6 is pretty reasonable actually for a handling fee.

---
110% value: $246.488 (Item + Shipping)
Duty: $246.488 * 0.25 = $61.622
VAT: $246.488 * 0.14 = $34.50832
Total Tax: $61.622 + $34.50832 = $96.13032

Damn so many taxes I can't even keep track
Notice above, even with my voucher I still pay full taxes (f#@king SARS are aholes)

50% excluding handling fee and 50 cents to the dollar currency conversion fee.

No wonder SA has a shortage of true techies. It is just too damn expensive to be one in this country.

The $6 is the shipping company's handling fee for doing you the "favor" of putting the items through customs (which is a joke because what, are you going down there to do it yourself? WTF)
They typically charge this on top of the already inflated shipping fee.

The currency conversion fee used by Amazon is probably going to be close to what you'll get from your bank btw. (if not less than your bank)
IIRC Virgin money charge 1.5 or 2% of the charge as a "conversion fee" and they are about the standard from what I could tell.

Btw. updated my post above with slightly more detail
