Hey guys

Just looking for some advice. I am looking at purchasing the 300T D0Link Router for work. We don't want to spend more than necessary so the 504 is out. What we need to do is have the option for the majority of our users to route through the router directly and one or 2 servers to bridge through using different account details through PPOE at the same time. Is this possible? Also i presume it has no firewall or port blocking facilities and i will still have to route through my smoothwall?

Thanks in advance

I don't have a 300T, but on the 504T I've been unable to use a PPPoE connection from the router and a bridge connection at the same time. You can only create connections with different VCI settings (it says VCI 35 is already in use), and I'm not sure it's even theoretically possible.

If anyone could shed some light on the subject I'd appreciate it.

If you're routing through smoothwall you might as well only use bridge connections, not sure why you need both.

So smoothwall will allow me to setup a bridge connection through the 300t and then i can use that as a default gateway for all the users on my lan as i currenty have it setup? If i wanted to have a machine connect using different account details i presume i would have to then bypass the smoothwall and connect directly?

I will love it if you can do that because I'm looking for that as well. I tried the linksys, dlink 300t and the normal telkom router and none of them can do it.

Keep on hoping........

What about an SMC router? The SMC7904BRA to be precise. Looks very nice feature wise and is cost affordable.

From what I've been able to source on the web, it's not possible to combine bridge and router modes (somebody let me know if I'm wrong on this).

That would mean it wouldn't make much sense to buy the SMC router as you'll only be using it as a modem anyway, if you want to log in with different accounts at the same time. The DSL-300T will be fine.

The Smoothwall setup will work with any ethernet ADSL modem or router in bridge mode, I'm 99.99% sure of that. I'll set it up tonight to remove that 0.01% of doubt from my mind.

I quite like Smoothwall, just got it up and running :)

The hardest part was finding a second NIC, you need a GREEN + RED setup, even if you're linking to your modem through a hub. Luckily I dug up an old RTL8029 card (PCI combo card, hehe) and an extra fly-lead.

Basically you set your red interface's address setting to PPPoE during setup and then cofigure a dialup though the web-interface (Networking, PPP Settings). I had to manually enter the DNS server address before it worked.

I've just tested a direct PPPoE connection with a different account from my windows PC and that works too, each are assigned a different IP.

All I did on my 504T was delete the existing connection and create a bridge connection.
