30gb ADSL Accounts

I don't doubt, for one second, that telkom is going to come down HARD on all of us and get us back the restrictive 3 gig cap for which they'll charge a fortune, irrespective of what we or icasa say.

Nope, it definitely costs around that for ISPs. How they make profit is (allegedly) explained in the letter from IS. They are essentially "stealing" bandwidth from Telkom. But this is speculation, and it would be nice to get clarification from the 30GB ISPs.

Check Warichards post above for clarification - he's from Web Africa.

While IS is correct in their assumption that the new pricing stucture from SAIX is due around October/November (and pretty correct as to the kinds of options Telkom is looking at), their indication that the reselling ISP's are somehow "getting around a Telkom loophole" and therefore exploiting Telkom's systems is incorrect. We have (as do the other ISP's I'm sure) contractual agreements that allow us to provide up to 30GB uncapped bandwidth (but no more). However, as we have stated in the past, these prices are not long-term prices, and the amount of usage you'll get per rand is likely to decrease substantially come the new pricing structure.

So Telkom know all about this and have given you the go-ahead? If that's the case, then it will be *highly* unlikely that we're going to go back to the stone age with 3GB caps, although the price will be increased.

But why would Telkom sell 3GB of bandwidth for R190, and 30GB of bandwidth for R300? The numbers just don't add up. It's all coming from the same supplier

I admit it will be terrible going from 30GB back down to 3GB, but to answer your question, of course it's worth it. Having 30GB for 3 months and paying less than I usually pay for 3GB is totally worth it.

I see we dont share the same mentality, Id rather have a stable or lowering of prices over a year than substantial drop for 3 months and then increase for rest of next year coming the whole new billing system..

Overtime is only thing that counts for me, and by the look of things, overtime things will cost more with new pricing than less. All indication so far leading to the new billing system is based on this "loophole" and telkom getting pissed off.

If this in fact a loophole or something not 100% agreed on from the start, as a service Telkom imposed, then Telkom can argue with price increase that they need to make up for their loss with the "loophole" being exploited.

That could just be a step backwards, rather than forward. If all my ranting is wrong, heck.. Good going.

PS. coming back to something karnaugh mentioned in a different post, we dont have alternative choice yet, if we piss Telkom off to much.. to fast.. they can just refuse to offer ADSL services alltogether, who do we go with then? Just imagine that, as retarded as it may sound. Currently we still at their mercy, like it or not.

Clipse, I absolutely agree with you. I would also prefer to have a stable or lowering of prices. This is our long term goal. No one knows whats going to happen for sure with the new billing system. Prices could go up or they could go down. What I'm saying is that I would rather have 3 months of lower prices than nothing at all. I'm saving a lot of money over 3 months. I'm getting 27 more GB's per month for 3 months. I certainly can't complain about that.

Ya - right - at their mercy - Bzzzz. They could be taken to court for revoking the service for no reasonable grounds as they have charged an instalation fee - unless of course they would like to refund me for the installation and buy back my router. It would eb to much trouble for them

OVER TIME this sort attention given to ADSL is going to lower prices not increase them. Do you think Telkom are bringing in price decreases on line rental out of the goodnes of their hearts? - Unlikely. It is because of pressure brought to bear on them by the ICASA hearings - generated from interest and demand from the public.

Whatever we do over the next few months is going to make no difference. It is not going to anger the Telecoms GOD

I believe that Telkom was going to be hard nosed about BW in October/November, but agree that the Barbarians at the door (Telkom) might well be pushed back by ICASA. We can only hope...

In the meantime, DEFEND THE CASTLE BOYS!!!! MAN YOUR POSTS!!!

Excuse the pun...

;)

It would appear to me, that it is Internet Solutions complaining about the fact that those ISP's can offer high cap solutions for very low prices as SAIX resellers, whereas IS are bound to very high IP-Connect prices.

mm

Frankly, i don't care if it pisses telkom off...Why the heck did they try and rip us off in the begining??...Seems to me that telkom thinks they are some sort of "mafia" or something......just hope some other tel company could come in..:-(

Can we not start a new wave of protests somehow to keep the pressure on Telkom?

I have a feeling that if we just rely on ICASA actually introducing regulation to bring down prices we are going to be very disappointed.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Ye.. Someone phone Carte Blanche and get them to do another article. This time about the ICASA report and such!

Have Carte Blanche covered the current telecommunication issues in SA? If not then it would be the best way to spread the message , I mean remember when they did that thing about the rides at Gold Reef City, that really opened peoples eyes. If this issue gets that much exposore then mabye the day will come when we will watch telkom die like the dogs the are!!!!!!(Evil sniger)

yeah that will be great

Two Things:
1. They obviously CAN handle people downloading 30gb a month. The 30gb packages have been around for a bit.
2. They can tell the difference between local and int. If they couldn't, then how come when we're capped, we can still download at full speeds for local data?

Am I hitting the finger instead of the nail?
Cheers, Nick

Having dealt with IS on various occasion on a professional level, I am not surprised by a statement like this made by them.

Our company recently moved to LaserLink because we fall in their core client base, and cancelled our contract with IS. Their response ? Immediate letters stating that LaserLink is illegal, they are being sued by IS, and that they cannot possibly offer us the service that we had signed up for.

Previously I had summiliar situations dealing with IS when moving customers away from them too compitition. I take these particiliar type of letters from IS with a pinch of salt and having used their uncapped service find it completely unstable compared to the capped service provided by SAIX.

Furthermore, if SAIX is being cheated by false reporting on bigger accounts, why can I log onto there network to view my stats when I have a larger capped account ? Am I missing the point that SAIX as a part of Telkom has to report to them anyway ?

I agree that we are not sure what will happen in future but I have seen to many people get walked over by letters like this from IS, verbally or written, and they do tend to get upset the minute compitetion starts taking or threathening their userbase. Reminds me of a few other international companies I know.

My two cents worth.

they did about a year ago, you can get the video here
right-click the link and save target as. unfortunately it didn't answer much questions because telkom got some dimwit to blatantly lie infront of the camera. all she could say was "no comment", "we deny that" or "our rates are competitive". she literally couldnt put together a proper sentence. maybe its time to do a follow up story, including icasa in the insert this time.

Thanks Diago for the info ... I am guessing this is because the IS uncapped is via Satellite, and SAIX is via the sub-marine cables. I would think the only issue here would be latency - can anyone confirm any specific issues this uncapped service has had?

I'll bend my usual standards and actualy say that IS might be doing a bit too much complaining these days and a bit less providing good services and trying to work around the problems (they could self provide...)
