30mpbs LTE vs 4mbps fibre

I'm currently on telkom LTE getting ~30mbps using speedtest.net

I am wondering how this would compare to a dedicated 4mbps fibre line (since this would be roughly in my same budget of ~R200pm). What is the "real" speed you would get with 4mbps? Does it feel faster/more responsive due to the lower latencies on fixed lines?

I know LTE can get congested but I pretty much always measure ~30mbps (probably not many users in my area).

It seems like a trade-off between speed and cap, since for R200 you get either 5GB @ 30mbps LTE or 20GB @ 4mbps FTTH.

in my area there is no LTE signal due to being in a dip.
we are so far from the exhange that 2meg is the only option from telkom and no one has fiber in the area.

also side note your fiber will be slightly more expensive as you need line rental as well as the cap....
 
30Mbps vs 4Mbps, hmmmmm

If speed is your requirement then it's a no-brainer.
If however you want stability, Fibre is king.
 
Less jitter with fibre. I don't mind my downloads taking longer, prefer no video buffering though. I chhose fibre
 
It all comes down to data costs when you compare mobile with fixed line.

If you can afford the LTE then 30Mbps vs 4Mbps is a no brainer. Data costs just get prohibitively expensive with mobile data.

I'd go for the fibre just because I'd be broke after the first day when my 5GB cap is used up.
 
I choose more data over bandwidth anytime of day. Fibre would be my choice. And my day to day use require lower latency and stability more so than brute speed.

First off, thank you for completing the Lynnwood Fibre Initiative survey, I appreciate your show of interest! :-)

LTE is very competitive at low data usage, however as soon as you move to multiple tens of gigs, or require a stable low latency connection, fibre is the clear winner (as far as I could tell from my analysis: Cost vs Data vs Speed). Over time LTE will also become slower and slower (just like 3G did) since the fundamental limit stays the number of users sharing the same spectrum to the same tower. The R200 p/m quoted was from the Vumatel website for 4 Mbps @ 20 Gigs, 200 Gigs cost just R350 (in other news Vumatel has indicated that they will be submitting a proposal to the Lynnwood Fibre Initiative, so it is not too far fetched to image we will have similar packages).
 
How does the latencies compare between fibre adsl and LTE?

I'm getting <50ms on LTE to local speedtest.net servers.

Or you can spend R999 and get 50Mb FTTH via Vuma :D
 
For some reason - Seeing 4Mb and fibre in the same sentence is cringe worthy - so much wasted potential :)

As has been said it's a compromise between speed, usage and stability. If you don't need a high cap you have to decide between speed and stability and which would benefit you most. Personally I think it's a disgrace we should still be considering wireless. Everything should have been high speed fibre already.
