Hey Peeps.

I've recently moved into a new property, been here for about a month and have been busy settling so I didn't really pay attention to how much electricity we're using. (It's prepaid)

Yesterday I finally had the time to take control of it and start filling electricity myself. I bought R150 from my Absa banking app and was in shock when I received 33 (point something) for R150. I did previously load for about R50 about 3weeks back and I got around 20 units. So I would've assumed like 60ish for R150.

I know there are different "blocks" and tarrifs depending on how much we use, a friend made me aware of this. However, it was the 1st yesterday and I'm assuming these blocks/tarrifs reset on the new month.

Should I query this with the municipality? I've tried to find a tarrif list for my area but no luck because our metros website is down

Step one - which municipality? There might be some monthly connection charges which get deducted first before any units are allocated.

EDIT: was able to find the tarrif list. I am assuming I fall in here: (IBT) because I'm not in a complex.

Are you buying directly from Ekurhuleni or some third party?
I think it's Ekurhuleni? Because when I was in a complex I used to buy from a 3rd party (ismrt) but now I can use any banking app. I just input the meter number and purchase. I'm not 100% sure I'm just assuming.

Doing a quick calc, Tariff A is quite a but cheaper than Tariff B (assuming you're using less than 800kWh per month). You might want to find out what is required to switch.

Please see my story below and proof of purchase and new rates, RIP off, no explanation for this huge charge, we all understand the fixed cost of R230pm, but this huge rate on my first units it's ridiculous I purchased R150, and got 23.5 units, for the R75 johannesburg, R75 fixed cost I understand, the first block is R2.72, they charged R3.19 kwh, ripping the public off no where do they charge that rate on the first block,

Cause it's not R75 to CP it's 86.25 cause 15% vat, so it's R63.75 worth of units

I'm not exactly sure how the costs were divided (the mentioned purchase slip might help), but guessing you haven't accounted for VAT.

Yes it's clear now they take R150, as seen on slip, but they take the vat of the balance of R150, makes sense now so minimum purchase would be R400, to cove fixed costs plus vat plus R170 electricity that 62.5 units sad state of affairs, yes

We can't see your slip...
