Evening,

As the title I recently bought a i7 3770 to upgrade my son's i5 3470.
When I install the 3770 and start up the pc switches off immediately...and then on and then off again.

Install the 3470 and voila...it starts up normally. The mobo is a Asrock z77 performance and the latest bios 2.10 was flashed.
I see there was a newer "beta" bios 2.30 (updated microcode) and still nothing when I flashed it.

The guy who I bought it from tested it before shipping it to me and it was working.
Has anyone came across this and is it "BIOS" related or is the CPU fried upon arrival?

I have googled but can't get to a straight answer...

Reset bios
Ensure heatsink is properly seated
Try another PSU
Using 4 or 8 pin cpu power connector?

My gut feel is power related.

It's definitely not a BIOS issue all 3770 CPUs should work fine even with the earliest BIOS of a Z77 board.

It could be that the pads of the CPU may have dulled. I've experienced that with some socket 775 CPU which caused the same issue you described.

Carefully cleaning the pads with some isopropyl alcohol on a cotton bud usually fixed the issue.

If that doesn't fix it, there's likely an issue with the CPU. I'm not sure if the I7 has a higher TDP than the I5, but if that's the case, then you can't rule out the possibility that the PSU may be at fault.

Reset CMOS, if you don't have a button or don't know about the jumper, the easiest way is to remove the power cord, pull the battery out for a minute then put it back and boot up.
