Hey Guys, I was wondering if theres a lot of difference between 384 and 512 lines...is it really worth pay R100 a month extra for line rental? According to my calculations, 512 will give you 15kbs more at full speed...sure it makes a difference, but how much really? What are your experiences on this subject??

I'm considering an upgrade in line speed, but I just don't know what to get...(willing to pay R200 more a month)...I have heard that a 1 meg line gets shaped really badly (I really don't know, I've just read/heard this)

P=Your comments will be put to good use! :D

4meg lines aren't shaped. Anyway the main difference is that a 512k line has twice the upload speed of a 384k line, and that extra 15kB/s downstream speed really does make a difference :)

yeah I was thinking of getting the 15kB/s extra speed, but then I thought about getting 10x my normal speed for what I spend on booze in one night... it was no contest. (and I've subsequently quit drinking, so all round benefits :D )

1Mbit / 512Kbit / 384Kbit are all shaped the same, there's no difference in the service except for the speed.

Incidentally however, 1Mbit is anywhere from 1 - 4Mbits depending on where you live; so if you want to upgrade your line speed, that's the one to go with... there is a HUGE difference in speed then... often as much as 10 times as fast as 384k... I get 280KBps on average on my "1Mbit" line.

So let me get this straight then....15kbs down makes a difference...1meg can be unstable (or varies from person to person)...and the 4meg line is the way to go and I should wait till August?? Or should I upgrade to 512 now and then again to 4meg in August ? I'm tempted to wait till August though..

Dude my dedicated 1 MBS gives a max of 60-90kbps

Shame (that's only a little faster than a 512Kbit line), alot of people are getting up to 480KBps on 1Mbit lines (please get capitalization right, it makes a big difference).

That's why Telkom call it DSL up to 4Mbits.

There is no 1Mbit line, there is only the "up to 4Mbit line" and it's no more unstable than any 384kbit line.

upgrade to 4 meg line

if you can afford the extra 200 odd bucks and in august you'll be paying less

to be honest when i went from 384 to 512 i didnt find my extra 100 bucks was well spent

I agree, i also went from the 384 to the 1Mb line but with a detour through the 512 for a day and then decided to move on rather

4mb isn't available to everyone, I'm stuck with 512k :( But it is better than 384k

just about everyone should be able to get 1meg and higher

you might be able to get 4 meg but you sure can get 1 meg which alot better than a tiny upgrade if you have the cash

exactly feo, you sit on the phone while they downgrade you from 4 3 2 and 1 meg

depends if you want the upload speed to double. you can upload at 10kb/s on a DSL384 and around 22 kb/s (I think - can't remember cos I am on 1024 now) stably on the DSL512.

depends what you use your connection from - if its only got general surfing then your not going to get too much extra by going up. I mean news24 can only load up so fast :) For me - I'm happy with 384k, if I need anything large downloaded I use my 5MB diginet at work :)

No it doesn't faster is ALWAYS better, I do really notice the difference when browsing from a 384k line... it's painful.

I guess once your used to it then going back is a pain. But as the original poster asked, is it really worth the extra R100. You might save yourself a second or two on each page loading.
