With all Telkom's fancy promotions and upgrades, 384k was left in the dark. Complaining about it will have no effect either.
So here's a suggestion to ALL ISP's .. Remove Shaping and throttling from the 384k completely and everyone's happy.. :D Downloading @ full speeds averaging @ 38kbps. How much damage can we really do;)

+ 1

It's pathetic really. We got throttled to hell and gone the other month for 'abusing' the line. I don't even d/l anywhere near 24/7.

WtF should we upgrade? To get the sh*t sooner?

+ 1 True

I'm happy to average less then 30gig each month .... But sad really when I think of how the little speeds of 384k users get shaped/ throttled to nothingness... :(

100 gigs a month, well actually 97 gigs to be more precise and that's downloading 24/7 for 31 days

add another 20 odd gigs if your p2p clients' settings are not monitors or limited.... But do u actually use what you download 24/7 30 days a week. I cant, I just need reliable speeds for now..

Hi all
Just wanted to say, Ive had MWEB 384kbps uncapped for a while now (6+ months?) and have never had a problem, the only downtime that ive ever had is when telkom were messing around. Sometimes do 50-60gb and not a problem, always good speed, and always connected :) I know the fair share have had bad experiences, but just wanted to add my good one, thanks MWEB :)

However, i do feel that a speed upgrade or revision of 384 should be considered?
Anyway, just my 2 cents

Yeah its frustrating. I download like 60-70gb a month out of a possible 100gb. The only reason that is possible though is I'm on the WA special. And thanks to the shtty line speed, ~70gb of DownloadPlus goes to waste *every* month (100gb allocated, ~30 possible in that timeslot). :( On a side note, thanks WA for the 30 though, much appreciated. :)

Switching to say Cybersmart and suddenly the line speed doesn't matter anymore....because that damn thing doesn't even download at 384k speeds. Is it really so unreasonable to expect the (capped) account to sustain youtube @ 384k speeds? WTF

you guys do bring up a valid point, but consider the following:
take the cheapest per gig price you can get and multiply that by 98. now look at the cost of a conventional 384 uncapped account. the numbers don't quite add up
...just saying

Was just thinking about this when I saw the thread as I'm sitting here trying to download a 147MB Yuotube video of Carl Sagan and it's gonna take an hour.

384kb/s line users get no love yet they probably make up the biggest subscriber base. Doubling the speed would have been nice.

+1 all ISP's should either make our lines unshaped or increase our line speed to 512kb

You get what you pay for! so in this case, you get the "entry level" package for a reason.

we'll have to wait on the DOC to realize 384kb can hardly be called broadband

as for unshaping the cheapy accounts, we're talking about a gig costing less than R4 then. i don't see seacom's recent R100 million "investment" managing that anytime soon

LOL just let us download 25 Million gigs then:D Problem solved...

Question is can Telkom's ageing infrastructure, e.g exchanges handle their biggest subscriber base running on double speed.

Point taken, but when Telkom upgraded 512k to 1meg who where left with troubles, Isp's who provide us with uncapped. Telkom just provides their line speeds, isp's deals with the issues.

I suspect the population of 384k users is much larger than the 512k, the last time entry level lines we upgraded to 384k, the adsl population was much lower to make a significant difference. Wonder if uncapped isps are able to continue providing services at the current price if 384k users are upgraded since they make up a large percentage of their users, probably more than both other speeds put together.

First time ADSL or internet users most likely sign up for a 384k service so the population is growing day by day. But to prevent new customers form signing up to 384k the bring out free 1meg trail....
Not a solution, but a problem they refuse to deal with...
