384kbps to 1mbps ADSL upgrade

I just got my Telkom ADSL line upgraded from 384k to 1mpbs and eagerly checked to see the almost 3x speed increase I had just got (for the pricey sum of R130 per month extra!).

Well needless to say in usual Telkom fashion I was left horribly disappointed :

Is this everyone else's experience? I am probably about 3km from the exchange. If this is the case I might as well save myself R130pm and downgrade again.
 
I see that your ISP is Mweb, did you have an uncapped 384 Kbps account with them that you're still running? Because that speedtest indicates the speed of a 384 Kbps account. If so, you'll need to call Mweb and upgrade your account to 1 Mbps as well.

Indeed, I did have a 384k account with MWeb but my first port of call was to query with them whether I had been upgraded, as my account stated I had, and they confirmed it was now a 1mbps account. Telkom had me doing the entire switch router off, wait, switch router on and still the same speeds.

Does the download speed on that speed test not indicate that I am getting slightly more than a 384k account though? Which is worrying as it looks like it has been "upgraded".
 
in future you can always check on my account at the mweb website to see if you have been upgraded. i have 1 mbps with mweb and mine is a much higher speed test than yours
 
I had the same issue as the OP. MWEB call centre first said it was the noise on my line (high attenuation) but I was definately on a 1Mb account with them, Telkom confirmed I was on a 1Mb account with them but recreated by port on my exchange, still had the 0.42Mb/s speeds.

PM'd MwebGuy on the MyBB forums and they reset my account at MWEB and within minutes i was getting speedtest download speeds of 0.84Mb/s - 1.02Mb/s.

So PM MwebGuy and see if they can do the same for you.

Yeah your speedtest shows that it is a bit more than you would have gotten on a 384 line, that's about the speed of a 512 line. If you can confirm that your account is 1 Mbps, then check in your router to see what speed your line in syncing at. Your speedtest should give you about twice the speed, so you should see a download speed of ~0.80 Mbps and an upload speed of around ~0.40 Mbps.

Also it could be a busy period due to it being office hours, so maybe try later this evening when things have quietened down a bit. You can confirm whether it is an Mweb problem by getting a 1GB prepaid account from Afrihost for R29 to test with, as their capped accounts usually give you full speed.

As a last port of call, PM Mweb Guy on the forum and he should be able to assist further and provide feedback.

Thanks! I'll definitely give that a try as those are the exact avenues I have followed except for the resetting of my account. Pity you can't "tag" someone in a post :)
 
if you want, i can check on your adsl line number if it was actually done on telkom side.
A client of ours upgraded his line telkom confirmed it was done, but when i check it wasn't,

Isn't there a rumour that the 384k lines will be bumped up to 1Mb in any case come June?

The thing is the fact I am getting some speed test results of 400kbps seems to indicate it has indeed been done.

There are rumours and it will happen but it won't help me if the upgrade still only results in these speeds.
 
I heard from a telkom techi yesterday that it will by bumped up. So no use paying more now. Just wait a bit

Not sure about that logic. If I pay prorata for the rest of the month I get the increased speed for the rest of the month. When it gets bumped up I no longer pay more than those bumped up, so no real loss in doing it now.

And if it doesn't get bumped then I get to enjoy these faster speeds a lot sooner than the rest. Also gives me a chance to see these speeds before everyone gets bumped and Telkom uses that as the excuse why we are all getting slow speeds.

Existing 1 Mbps subscribers should be bumped up to 2 Mbps.

Ah, yes, I've heard that rumour too. But surely easy enough to ask them to downgrade me to 1mbps. Especially if I am only getting 400kbps on my 1mbps "upgrade"

It looks like your account is still a 384 account on MWEB's side. PM MWEBGUY and ask for a 4meg test account.

havent the rumours of everyone getting bumped up in their speeds been going around for years now?
 
Ok, it took a little back and forth with MWeb Guy, and numerous resets of the router but it seems I am getting acceptable speeds now :

Not sure what they do their side but just happy to be getting more than my 384k line now. It seems no one gets near 1024 though from the sounds of things?

You'll never get the full 1024 due to overheads, etc. Best I get is around 0.95 Mb/s on a Speedtest.
