There seems to be a few threads around purchasing new TV help, and now am in need of some myself :)
I'm really interested in getting a 3D tv (don't hate, appreciate :D) and find myself wondering what the ACTUAL differences are between some makes/models.

For instance, I had my heart set on the Sammy 46D7000. Active 3D, decent 'refresh rate', eliminated some of the larger crosstalk/ghosting from the C7000....
Then the 6 series started being introduced. Now the 46D6600 is roughly the same price as the D7000, but surely should not be?? I was told that we no longer use refresh rates here, that we now use the Clearmotion rate which sounded like Salestalk for I don't know the specs of these tv's. I mean, the D7000 has a refresh rate of 200hz and clearmotion of 600...... you cannot tell me that that figure may not mislead someone into thinking it competes with plasma??

Anyhoo, what I'm really looking for is other people's opinions, as I am now just clouding my own. Plus I'm pretty sure people here actually know what they're talking about and not just trying to sell an item in their store!!!!!

I'm not looking at plasma, so as much as that 51D550 is a hot tv, it's not for me. The only other one I was considering was the LG 47LW6500.... Passive 3D, but if cinema's are anything to go by, I don't feel I'd be losing too much from Active 3D? Plus it's set to the proper size to watch DVD's/Blu Rays.

Thoughts and opinions pls....

Ok, so I'm going to necro my own post back to tell you how my tale ended :)
I bought the Sammy D7000 and so far, have not looked back. While there is not a lot of Fantastic 3D material out there, there are some movies/clips that re-enforce my decision to go ahead with this.

I invested a LOT of time (7 months) to research 3D and the TV sets I was interested in. I haven't had the TV for long, but I've tinkered with some movie clips and mostly games (use as a tv and PC screen).

If anyone has any questions regarding 3D, or any doubts, I'll try my best to answer. All I can say is I'm one happy chappy right now :D

Nice one, did you get uniform lighting or do you have a problem with light spots? Test in dark room with black picture.

Thanks bud. Fortunately the backlighting seems to be largely uniform. I won't lie, I was worried when I first turned the set on as it was noticibly lighter on the left, going to black on the right. Time seems to have sorted that out and while it's not exactly 100% perfect, I'd say it's 99% there....

I wouldnt go for LG 3DTV even if passive technology is at play. I have a Samsung 2011 3DTV and I'm very happing with it.
In the older days (um 1 year ago or so) ghosting was a major issue provided that the set didnt warm up first so to speak. The Samsung 2011 plasma TV's not too bad but still entry level. I dont see any ghosting on my Samsung. You need to calibrate your set and experiment with different 3D active glasses to find your "happy place" or desired effect. Remember to keep it dark! :-)

Do you notice any vertical banding problems in low light or uniform colour scenes when the camera pans horizontally? The bleed or clouding was nothing compared to the banding problem.

I also purchased one and that annoyed the hell out of me. I returned it, tested two more in store on either end of the serial number range they had in stock and they had the same problem. I then also tested a 60" D8000 and it had the same problem.... R64000 screen and it has vertical banding. Pathetic quality control to say the least.

I think Samsung knows it and are just hoping the general public don't.

My set works perfectly so far. I now play all my games (bar BF3) in 3D with no banding at all. Watching movies is also just as hassle free. I'm meticulous when it comes to my items, so have looked closely for imperfections in images or their quality, as previously noted by me.

Thor has some very quick scenes when he is fighting the frost giants... In 2D and 3D I never noticed banding.
Not sure if that's a help or hindrance to you....

What source do you use for your movies and is it SBS or full HD 3D? Also if you're using a pc, what graphics card do you use?

Well I'm glad you haven't noticed anything :) The screen is one of the best on the market at the moment apart from this issue. The vertical banding its also more accurately called "dirty screen" effect. It cant be seen during fast scenes.

Once you've seen it, it cannot be unseen. It just so happens I noticed it when watching a particular movie and then I could pick it up easily afterwards.

My suggestion is don't go looking for it as you're happy with the TV, enjoy it :)

I only use it on my pc (blu-ray drive in it) through HDMI. TV just runs through the antenna. Normally you should not be involved in the mode choice unless you're downloading a clip that is not 'recognised' as 3D. As such, you just need to choose the source that matches that of the clip you got.

I have PowerDVD 10 for 3D Blurays and will be purchasing Tridef shortly (mainly for games) which also comes with it's own movie player. It's great for those clips as it allows you to choose the mode from the player, and allows you to adjust the pic for clarity/effect.

I have a Club 3D 5870.

Have my D6000 for over a month and simply love it !It plays SBS 3D movies.I didnt purchase a 3D player so mostly downloading movies and demos.Viewing distance really plays an important role for 3D.3 USB and 4 HDMI ports.I have TOPTV and the certain SD content is brilliant.Plays almost anything via USB ports.Very impressed so far.:)

But no only limited to....
You'll have SBS, Over/Under and in those, the choice of which frame is shown first (left/right, top bottom). Not sure about the 6 series, but I also have Cherckerboard... there are other modes, but those are by far the most popular. What really has surprised me is how much Analglyph content there is out there now.

Youtube's 3D channel springs to mind. It seems as though most places offer their clips in Anaglyph, where SBS is an added bonus?
