3D Printer - Amazing !!!

and the coolest thing about this is you can build your own one..

A guy I know told me it's R6000 for the printer, but the powder is very expensive (like printer cartridge costs - it's the ink that's expensive)

Lucky his finger is a very reliable source of information

Well he works at a 3D Company working with 3D Printers/Animation. I thought R6000 sounded cheap but thats what he said - I trust his judgment.....

I'm sure he wasn't talking about the ones in the YouTube clip though....

Seen one that uses sugar.

I Have a 3dscanner at work but no need for a printer (we have cnc machines).

There was one featured on the Colbert Report, it was a small printer that u have to assemble, for Around $1299.. I'll see if I can a link to the video..

The nextengine Desktop 3d printer is also pretty cool.

I have yet to see a 3D Printer from NextEngine. Only a 3D Scanner, which is pretty awsome for the price.

R6000 for a 3D Printer? Maybe if you build it complete by yourself. You can by a kit from CAD House for R10 000.

Did anyone see the Carte Blanch episode on 3D Printing. Go check it out on their website.

Filament is also cheap in comparison to high end printers. On the high end printers you could pay as much as R10 000 for 2Kg of material.
3mm ABS filament for these kit printers cost about R720 a Kg. How much are you paying for your run of the mill HP inkjet printer cartridge? R300 for 15ml?

Yea you are right, went through the nextengine newsletters and it is in fact the dimension 3d printer they suggest you use.

Yes you can. Selective Laser Sintering machines can build using tool steels, alloys, titanium, gold - you name it.

Ok, did not know that.

Still would not be very helpful (besides possibly to make samples) in our industry though. Can only imagine trying to make 180000 medals (currently we can make about 16 to 20 per die caster per minute) on one of these.

Does however make me want to take a 2n'd look.

What we do is make a master sample (Pattern) on the ProJet HD 3000 Plus. From this we make a vulcanised rubber mould which is used for alloy casting mass production.
We can also produce wax patterns on the ProJet CPX 3000 Plus, this machine is widely used in the jewelery industry.
Both these machines work on 16micron (0.016mm) layer technology, creating absolutly smooth surface detail and unseen before detail levels, minimum feature sizes of less than 0.2mm
