3d Printers South Africa

Now that my printer is nicely tuned (running on average 80mm/s) and has a proper full metal hot end (using a 0.6mm nozzle) I can finally get to playing with PETG like I wanted to. I opened a brand new eSun spool I received earlier this week, ran a benchy and was promptly rewarded with hissing and popping. WTF? Looking closer I could actually see the bubbles inside the filament (it's a transparent Orange). I plopped it into a dryer overnight and tried again this morning and wouldn't you know, printed perfectly. As a matter of interest I stopped printing test benchies and now print coasters - at least they're a lot more useful when done:

I was pretty surprised at how bad the brand new spool of filament was - the print was dull with a rough outer texture and stringing for days (I used a heat gun to clear the stringing on the benchy, it was pretty bad). Compare that to the shiny coaster with pretty much zero stringing. After the print this morning I put the spool into a cake tin with Silica balls - only to notice later that the balls have started turning pink so there's still some outgassing happening!

The balls in all the other cake tins are solid blue, only this spool is still outgassing. So, back into the dryer for another few hours.

Next up, I printed some SBS as I accidentally ordered one of these somehow. The initial attempt resulted in a clogged nozzle as I quickly realised how it turns into a pool noodle the moment it gets a hint of heat - even when FilX recommends using your PLA profile, so I dropped temps to around 200C. Second attempt resulted in some adhesion issues so I upped the bed to 60C and voila, perfect print. I usually have my bed at 50C for normal PLA as I've had some elephant foot in the past.

This was done with ZEN PLA Ultra Onyx black - one of new favourite filaments. Just a pity about the hex spool it comes on but I'm seriously thinking of using a router to round over the edges so it'll fit in my cake tins.

Almost perfect first layer:

And done:

Anyway, 3D printing noob here haha

I ordered some of the ZEN PLA during a special end of last year from Netram. Was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the filament. Also sold on Takealot, so that has now become my new standard way of getting to free shipping if I need something under R450. I now only buy eSUN, and ZEN is my second choice for PLA.

And yes, the hex spool is super annoying for fitting in the cake tins. Also had one that got a little damaged in shipping, bent it back but it somehow snagged the filament during a long print resulting in a failed print. I've also considered moving the filament to one of the eSUN reusable spools I have. I wouldn't use a router though...those little wood fibres might just get onto the filament, and into the hotend for a nice little clog. Guess how I know that. ;)

P.S. The ZEN minima has normally shaped spools. :) https://www.netram.co.za/1636-pla-minima I bought a bunch of these rolls as mystery colours, and they print really well. Earlier in the thread I had those yellow drawers I printed for converting an old CD rack. That was all printed in ZEN Minima.

Seriously, nice job!

I have to ask you some advice:

How much would it cost to machine the following from aluminium pipe (pipe has an inner diameter that is good enough and only the outside needs to be machined):

Total length is about 14cm

I need some of these made and have NO idea where to go to have this done.
You could try Made in Workshop in Randburg

They are a Maker Space and I think they can connect you with makers who might be able to help with small runs

Awesome, thanks for that!! And they're cheaper than Davinci where I bought the last stuff at.

Ok, I won't use a router then. I'm gonna have to give some more thought to this...

I imported a Bambu Lab P1P with an AMS unit from Bambu Lab in the USA and made use of Aramex International shopper. Around a week later following receipt of the machine with the AMS I saw BuildVolume is now selling the machines. They take care of warrantee issues on the product, their price works out around R3,500 more than what I paid. I however believe it would of been a lot easier buying it directly from them at a premium and having the after sales back up. My P1P gave me issues around a month after arrival and it took me a further two weeks to figure out it was a seized linear bearing. Appears the bearing was exposed to moisture in transit or prior to arrival. I replaced the bearing with a locally purchased bearing and have been printing with no problems. I have now ordered a X1 carbon combo from BuildVolume and can't wait for it to arrive.

How is the printer going?

I am looking for a no fuss, working solution as well...

The printer is really amazing and prints great, and compare to my Ender 3. If it appears I am bragging this is not my intention, I'm just extremely excited and can't wait for the X1 to arrive. Sharing the good news, a printer that really prints straight out of the box. To get my Ender 3 to print faster and cleaner I have spent a lot of time modding the printer and still with all of the changes and upgrades made there is no comparison.

Is it done yet??
Haha no, they still in boxes. I had to make a spot in the garage and decided on a proper bench to have a dedicated clean space for 3d printing. It’s been a while since I did any semi serious woodworking, so did the bench (and another behind me for other stuff) out of cheap shutter ply. I still need to finish the drawers, but I wanted the working surface all done and finished with a hard wearing polyurethane coating so it has time to dry properly before I start the build. Still a lot of cleanup to do and it was a lot more work than I remembered - my back is killing me…

I placed an order for one and after weeks of waiting for shipping my order was cancelled.

I did get a refund but still pretty bummed. Even considering to just get a Bambo from Build Volume

Did you have to use a drop shipper?
No way?! MagicPhoenix? I placed my order on the 21st of Feb, fully expecting to wait 3 weeks before they even ship (confirmed with their guy on their Voron discord channel). I got a message on the 27th of Feb that it was ready to ship and it was delivered to my door on the 6th of March using DHL. Kinda caught me off guard a little as I still needed to make space for it (as I said above).

Maybe I was just lucky, but I do know of others in discord who also had to wait a little prior to me because they had to build up stock, but certainly not as long as you have. And no, no drop shipper - shipping was $63 which was a big reason I went for the kit (and the assurance from @Gnome about the quality of the kit).

I know it probably put a bad taste in your mouth, but maybe hit them up on the Voron discord first and just try order again?

No i was not aware of Magic Phoenix.
I Trier LDO first but they don't ship to RSA and with drop shipping it becomes very expensive.

I the pulled the trigger on an AliExpress kit with the idea of upgrading the really cheap parts.
My AliExpress order got canned.
Ah, then grab the MP kit you won’t be sorry! If you serious then either PM me or @Gnome so we can tell you what to get from them and what to get locally (like the enclosure panels) and save some money in the process.

Funny you mentioned Ali - I got the V0.1 from the Fysetc store (thinking that would arrive before the MP kit) and it also arrived on Tuesday without issue. I have the same plan as you with that one - upgrading it to nicer parts (and upgrading to V0.2) as I go along although what I received wasn’t half bad to be honest.

That is a really good looking work bench. Well done!

The lighting at the top will also help filming and photographing your work.
Thanks man, I appreciate that! I need to get started on printing a bunch of the Honeycomb Mounting System's grids as I want to cover that back sheet with it. Kinda break the dreary look and mount some tools on there.

Please link some details on this? Only thing Google finds is for flight sims or photography.
