So, we have invested in a little 3D printer - the XYZ Da Vinci Pro.

So far .... we have realised that ABS is not too lekker for fine printing, PLA seems to work better for detail.

Anyone else on the forum with one?

Care to share experiences?

I just got Anet A8 2 weeks ago. Enjoying it tremendously. Only printing in PLA.
3D Printing store in Centurion unfortunately out of all PLA.
Got some at Cad House, also in Centurion.

Once you get ABS dialed in you won't go back to PLA (for smaller parts). The joy of ABS is it's soft enough to finish (sand etc.) whereas PLA is very difficult to work with if you want to post-process.

/jumps on the bandwagon.......

I have some jars with an unusual thread. How difficult would it be to print plastic lids that seal properly?

Would you have to be an engineer or would you just put an existing lid in the printer and it'll make a template?

Still have to try that.
Also want to try the flexible stuff. Guy at Cad House gave me about 15 m to try out.

So long as the threads can be properly measured and appropriately matched up on the lids when they're modeled - it'll be fine. Usually the bigger the thread the more wiggle-room you have for error.

Tks saor.

Have any of you been paid for work so far? Just interested.

Our printers are part of a business so yes - all our prints are paid for jobs. The prints are usually part of a broader service (product design / development) rather than just getting files from people and printing their stuff which we don't really do or want to do.

Nice, so you design/develop something and give the client a 3D printed prototype or sample. Stunning.

What've you printed so far?

Please dont laugh - 3D print virgin me ....

1. A cube to calibrate

2. Some artistic stuff - horses and the like

3. Some gears to check fit

4. Some boxes to check tenacity and modulus

5. A bust of my son

6. Various key ring stuff, light switch covers and cell phone covers

7. Most importantly ..... a Batman badge for my door

Cool at least it's useful stuff :). I'm assuming you're using a 0.4 / 0.6mm nozzle? If you're going to try ABS again I'd suggest getting another nozzle for it and keeping them separate. The bed temp for ABS needs to be at least 90°C for decent adhesion (assuming a glass bed) & run your nozzle temp at around 240° and keep any cooling fans to a minimum. But it sounds like you're doing fine with PLA for now.

You just bought it to play around with?
