Hello,

I have an ADSL line and its been pretty good in the year or so that I've had it. However, I need to make sure that if the ADSL goes down that I have a backup in place.

So, I was looking into the Billion 7402GXL router, which, as far as I can tell handles both 3G and ADSL.

The question is does it fall back to 3G automatically if ADSL goes down? I may not be at the physical location of the router at all times and I'd really like to know that it switches automatically?

Thanks,

John

Not sure about the 7402GXL but my 810VGTX failovers to the 3G automatically.
Can even specify under what conditions it should failover.

7402 can be configured to use a primary and failover connection based upon specified conditions ( ping to xx fails yy times, switch, return when ping succeeds )

Hi there,

Thanks for the info, so this can be easily done. Both of these routers are Billion if I'm not mistaken.

I'm a little cautious of Billion at the moment. I have a W40 which I got with my ADSL account and its been working well with only my laptop on wireless. Now that I've got a desktop connected via wired LAN it keeps resetting. I've seen a few posts with the same problem being reported, so I'd hate to buy an even more expensive modem from them and have the same issues (I have tried doing a firmware upgrade and I also now run the wired PC through a small switch to make sure its not the PC's network card)..

Anyway, thanks for the feedback..

Out of interest, does anyone know if it would be possible to use the existing W40 router (assuming the issues of above are resolved), and then plugging in two separate USB HSDPA modems (to the PC), one from MTN and another Vodacom. Then having some script on the PC determining which connection to use?

I don't mind Linux or Windows, just something which works. I only run two apps on that PC and both are written in C++ compiled with the gcc compiler, so its easy enough to compile for Linux or Windows..

Thanks,

John

Yes. This is most definitely possible. Have a look at the Traffic Splitting links in my signature.
All you need to do is to switch between the default routes.
