Sorry I have to ask. I want to know with what kind of data transfer method 3G works. EDGE works with packet data. Does 3G work with CSD?

AFAIK, when you make a video-call, it switches to CSD, since your connection is more reliable and yours for the duration of the call.

All other data (Internet, that is) is packet-switched.

Does this mean that you do not have to be in an area covered by 3G to make a video call? In theory, you would not even need a 3G phone.

No, unfortunately not.
3G operates at a different frequency, and the technology uses a different coding method to transmit and receive information. A 3G video call uses a 64kbps CSD call, while a 2G CSD call uses 9.6kbps.
So in order to do a video call, you need to be within 3G coverage, with a 3G capable device.

Thank you. Very well explained. I was confusing CSD with HSCSD.
