Hi, any recommendations for phones to use in South Africa. It must have 3G and be capable of at least 3.6mbps. It must be unlocked so I can use it on either Vodacom or MTN. I was looking at used Nokia 6234s, but am getting conflicting info on whether it does 3.6 or just 384k. Does anyone know? I would like to buy whatever phone I find for under $100 US if possible (50 pounds, R 750. Thanks!

Hi Fred
AFAIK the 6234 is only 384k.
Unlikely you will get one new here in that price bracket:(
Best spot to check spec would be www.gsmarena.com
3.6mbps only on tv ads most likely:mad:
I wouldn't, personally, go on a limb for 3.6 unless it is not much more expensive.
That said - maybe just search the forum to see if people are seeing worthwile speeds lately. I did not see any increase during the trial - max 1-1.4mbps in good "weather".

HDSPA Phones

I'm still learning about all the options, but certainly narrowing it down. I believe I've found there are 384k phones, 1.8 phones and 3.6 phones with 7.2 on the way? If I can't really get 3.6, then maybe a 1.8 phone would do. Do they exists or was it skipped over from the 384k, right to 3.6? Do they rent a phone that will go over 384? I could try throttling my router to see if I could use those speeds, but from what I have heard from 384k people is that it is really slow. What's the cheapest phone that does 1.8?

What about a MOTOROLA RAZR V6 maxx, will that work? It seems to have 3.7 and the right frequencies.

Looks right for 3.6Mbps

Advertised from around $230 on above link.
Doubt you will see those speeds though.
Check motorola site re pc connectivity.

To answer the rest. Yes, you get 1.8Mbps phones as well.
Basically 3G is 384k down and 64k upload.
HSDPA is the next generation of 3G which started at 1.8Mbps down and 384k up.
3.6 is just an evolution of 1.8Mbps
