Hey all

My uncle is flying out from the States tonight, and he wants me to pick him up a 3G USB data card/modem thingy.

Any reccomendations on which would be the best one to get, as he only needs it for about 2 weeks, and preferably one that is not network locked.

Regards

Myz

Most likely any modem he buys here won't work back in the US due to the different UMTS frequencies, so might as well go cheap. CNA, Game and Hi-Fi corp have a Vodafone 3.6 modem for under R400.

Must first see if supplier has stock but can get an unlocked modem for under R1k..

PS, he might find it useful coz it is also GPS capable(works with garmin software). I have tested with a 10'' netbook while driving.

I can explain in more detail how it's done if needs be.

You may also consider the Prepaid internet starter pack from the Vodashops/4U Shops and Chatz connect. Retails for something like R399.00 and includes the modem, sim and 100mb per month for one year.

For it to be of any use on his return to the USA it would need to have HSPA on 1900 or 850MHz.

If buying here the modem will not be network locked but if it has Vodafone dashboard software it will need a unbranded copy of the dashboard software to be installed to the PC to enable connection to non-Voda networks! For example if you get a Vodafone Huawei K Series modem (not -Z models as these are made by ZTE) you'd need to download a PC installed copy of Mobile Partner. He'll then need only set up a connection profile for the US network when back home.
