Hi All,

I've been using GPRS through my P910i for about a year now and finally took the plunge and got myself a Data Connect Card (Novatel Merlin U630) and I must say I'm quite impressed. Took less than 5 minutes to install on my work laptop running Windows XP SP2. Was online for about 3 hours without disconnecting once. Had to disconnect because the laptop battery was flat and the charger was at the office.

After I got the charger from the office, I have not been able to keep a connection open for more than 30 minutes. I live in an area where there is about 7 towers overlapping. It seems that everytime I switch to a different tower it disconnects. The dash then falls over as it tries to connect again.

I've been through the archives and see that there are people not using the dash, but I missed the part on how they did that. I'm sure the problem is with the dash and not the card - the dash is not a very stable application.

I also saw that some of you are using the card on Linux. I tried the instructions on my laptop running SuSE 9.3 but the only command that returns OK is AT. Any other command returns ERROR.

I've googled and everytime come back to the MyADSL forums.

I've been on Novatel's website (http://www.novatelwireless.com) and they almost have no information about the card on their website. For technical support it seems I have to contact Vodacom. Which I did and the person on the other side told me to switch the profile to 3G only, which works untill I switch to a tower that does not have 3G - it seems that 2 of the 7 towers around me only has GPRS on them. Once this happens, the dash just crashes.

On 3G I get a 1/5 or 2/5 signal. With GPRS I get a 1/5 to 5/5 signal.

I must say when the connection is on it works brilliantly and it is quite fast especially when I start using SSH and do audio streaming it is faster (and more reliable) than the ADSL at the office. Even the GPRS is faster through the Novatel card than through my P910i (connected with USB/Bluetooth/IR).

The only issue is this disconnecting issue.

Can anyone point me in some direction to get the connection more stable?

Thanks

Albert

For Windows, you can try this app: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=24019 It will at least redial of the connection is lost.

I also suffered from the 1/5-2/5 signal strength and it gets seriously flaky at 1/5. Got a new outdoor antenna that's sorted that out: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=26593

Downloaded this (at less than 3K/s over ADSL) and tried to install but got some error that the package size is wrong. Trying again using wget on Linux (at about 3.5K/s over ADSL)

Seems that I need to find someone in my area selling Poynting equipment...

Tried the instructions from the sticky post today - got an error but haven't had time to really look at it. Will look at it again tonight.
