I am very new to linux, but i want to give it a try. Windows is getting old for me and i want to play with something els. I just want to know if i can install my 3G on linux. The software i am using is mobile partner. The linux i am going to use is Mint 15.

Almost all 3G dongles are plug 'n play on Linux. What make and model is the modem?

This :)

edit, I have plugged many 3g dongles into linux boxes and in the last 2 years never had an issue.
also, about a 35 second set up and you are good to go.

I had issues once with a Fedora install and had to fiddle around a bit with modeswitch. It was fixed in the next release though and haven't had issues since.

You don't need to use any additional software when connecting on a linux machine. That modem should work fine with Mint 15, but best thing to do is just try it out. Download the live CD ISO and boot with it, connect the modem and see if it works.

i am using the Hawaii 3220 modem, but i use mobile partner for connection. Its a MTN modem but i have a 8Ta sim

My rule is if the modem does not work on Linux then its junk and so far the rule has held true for the last 8 years I've been using Linux and modems.

does linux play all games like windows do. I want to play my BF3 on the linux and my steam games

No

But do check out and support Humble Bundle. A lot of the games are ported to Linux. https://www.humblebundle.com/

I also tried the emulators and gave up. Ended up buying a console for my BF3 and use Linux for Indie games and work.

As cb says, no.

Don't move to Linux if you intend to play games, not yet at least. A dual boot may be an option for you if you want to try it out without losing your Windows install.

yep :)

about 2 to 3 years back I had one that would not work no matter what I did (then I tried it in windows and same issue).
Besides that one other that would not work about 4 years ago, also, next release and worked fine.

Don't waste your time, get a 3G router and connect to it via WIFI from your PC or laptop. Will save you many headaches trying to get a modem working with Linux.

I haven't had a days issue with any modern linux release with any modem. It is much simpler configuring it in Linux than using any other OS.

I will agree though that getting a 3G router is a good idea but not so useful if the 3G modem is being used on a laptop that needs a connection while travelling around.

There's no reason you can't travel with your 3G router. Most of them are nice and small, and work well for when you're travelling with your wife or girlfriend. Both of you can share the 3G connection easily then.

When I plug my 3g Dongle into my ubuntu desktop, its is automatically configured. Including having all the CellC settings. You basically just have to click the "connect" button.

No but there are allot of windows games currently being ported over to steam for linux, all the games perform faster in linux compared to windows so far.

Fail

I have had more grief getting 3G modems to work on Windows than on Linux. The 3G routers are anyway running linux and if you need to updated them with udev rules, the same as Linux when you get an unsupported device.
