My folks are moving to a new place soon and there are no (decent) Telkom lines in the area and they refuse to upgrade the infrastructure. CellC then offered to put up a tower but have since pulled out due to ROI. My father works from home and needs the internet. The cellphone reception is OK and depending on where you are in the house you get can 3G, HSUPA and some other HSPA connection. As luck would have it, where the office is located in the house the signal is not great.

Can you guys recommend something that can go on the roof or outside the house that will boost connectivity? I've seen this posted in another thread - has anyone used it or something similar? And how do they connect to a computer/router? Is Telkom WiMax worth checking out?

Recommendations and help are appreciated!

An external antennae will make a world of difference. I would use a TP Link router and a dongle attached to the antennae. That way the antennae can be positioned to get the best signal.

If he does that and he is still struggling he should call the network concerned and get hold of someone in the coverage department and they should either be able to advise where the best position for the antennae is and sometimes they will send out an engineer to position it correctly.

Thanks man, we'll have to do a lot of tests to find the best place and to find a decent router that can do the job.
