Does anyone have info on 3g (or GPRS) availability in Zim. Would like to help a friend set up there if it is available - looking at Harare and Marondera area. Any first hand info will be appreciated. Thanks.

hahaha!

You're kidding right? You been through Zim lately? You know it costs close to R1,000 for a prepaid start up kit?

Forget about 3G. You're lucky to get GSM signal half the time just driving through.

For SIM card and/or cellphone supplies to Harare area: www.mukuru.com

Maybe they can advise you on the network status as well.

*SIGH* Life is really terrible there...

is there a 3G network at all in Zims? what speed?

Anyone knows where we can find a coverage map?

There *MAY* be 3G somewhere in Zim, but as I said, from personal experience, forget about it. There is no chance, the networks are terrible for voice, I wouldn't attempt trying the net on those towers..

Okay, I've had my last two attempts at posting lost because of stupid login issues. I keep logging in and then it... Ah, never mind. Anyway...

As Velenoso says, the mobile networks are awful. You can spend 30 minutes constantly redialing a number and not even have it ring once because they networks are so congested. So yeah, 3G is not gonna fly. However, if you need broadband...

I was a volunteer in Zim for 2 years (up until January) and our mission office had a wireless internet connection through Ecoweb (www.ecoweb.co.zw). Was decent - probably equivalent to an iBurst connection. Also, a lot of the internet cafe's had Ecoweb wireless. Uses Wi-Max I believe.

Also, ZOL had lots of ads for broadband (www.zol.co.zw), although I don't have any personal experience with this.

Either way, expect to pay a lot - definitely a lot more than you would for an equivalent service in SA.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

You must be crazy.... btw how much does a 1 minute call cost there... should be a couple hundred million per minute

That's strange... when I get logged out, I log in and can then still continue with my post-in-the-making.

Anyway, thanks for the info on Zim's (only) available Internet options.

I think it was because I had logged in in a different browser tab, but oh well :)

They using WIMAX in Zim..... must be pretty expensive and how could that country, if they have wimax, get it before us.
