Hi all!

First of all, let me say: I'm new to this site, but what I've read thus far, I am confident that I'll get the required help here! :)

Secondly: Please bare with me... I'm not at all technical inclined and pretty much a novice as far as any kind of wireless connections is concerned. So please, if you can help me, it will have to be a step-by-step guide! :o

Here's my set-up:

1. A Desktop PC, running Windows XP Professional, connected to a 3G mobile internet USB-modem.

You may ask: Why mobile internet for a desktop? Well, because I bought it for my laptop orignally, which I need to move between home and office a lot. Plus: I do not want to go to the costs of having a fixed line installed, as I'm renting an apartment and might have to move around.

2. A Laptop PC, running Windows Vista, with build-in wi-fi.

3. As the desktop did not have built-in wi-fi, I bought a D-Link DWA-110 Wireless G USB Adapter to connect the two PC's with each other - which did the job I required it for, well at the time.

My question now is:

How do I go about in connecting the two PC's so that I can have internet access on both (the internet connection is fixed to the desktop pc though!), without having to buy additional equipment?

On advise from other's I've tried the whole home office / network set-up (with the assitance of the wizards) thing and got both PC's connected, but without any luck as to getting the internet available on the Laptop... I've even made sure to have the firewall switched off in total on the desktop too (Which I do not really want, because I'm a bit security-worried having that always switched-on and connected to the internet. So, if there's a way past this, please advise.).

I really don't want to spend any more money on this, but if there is no other way, then please do advise me on the cheapest option(s) as to make this sort of a wi-fi home hotspot possible.

I'm looking forward to all of your help! ;)

I don't think it would work without investing in a 3G capable wireless router. There are quite a few out there now.

Shouldn't be a problem just setup internet connection sharing. Create a ad hoc network between the two computers.
1. Use 192.168.0.1 on the pc with the internet connection, use 192.168.0.2
on the laptop.
2. Go to the dialup connection that your 3G connection uses (under network connections). Right click the connection> properties > advanced > enable internet connection sharing (allow other network users...) and choose your wireless connection under Home networking connection.
3. Now on the laptop (192.168.0.2) wireless adapter specified in 1 change the default gateway and preferred DNS to 192.168.0.1
4. Connect the 3g connection and test.

Try disabling all firewall if it fails, if its blocked by your firewall you need to add a rule to your firewall.
