Looking for cheapest 3G modem. Can I buy these from suppliers other than MTN/VC? Anywhere like Matrix warehouse or Computer Mania etc.

What do they go for? Otherwise, should I just use my phone if it's 3G capable?

I got a cheap one off eBay, works just fine.

Try this, the seller is OK.

That's a nice modem, I bought one and it works well on Vodacom.

He sometimes has cheaper modems like the Vodafone K3565.

So,less than a grand if imported. Thanks Jola.

I'd rather buy locally, if there is anything within R200 or so of those in the link.

You wont easily find something in the R200 range unless its second-hand, and/or falls apart after 2 months.

You're realistically looking at around 500-1000 for the lower ranged priced modems.
Your prices from MTN/VC would be within the 5-10% median difference than any other supplier, where your postage and packaging from another supplier would make that difference back.

Sigh this 56k is killing me. I can at least get better speeds (14kb/s) with gprs edge, but not until they reduce their prices to sensible levels.

Even the modem is overpriced.

I bought a K3565 yesterday and activated the (prepaid) sim with my SE C902. I found that connecting with the C902 is hugely better than connecting with the K3565. Maybe I bought a dud?

EDIT. Plugged the device into a different USB socket and seems to be working fine now ???

new modem is +- R800 i think, at game or incredible or hi-fi - not sure which one but saw it on a pamphlet.

Ebay works well and is cost effective if you are willing to wait for the device to get there.

Another option is my shop at http://www.3gmodems.co.za - I keep stock and delivery is usually overnight depending on your area. Modems come with a 2 month guarantee (carried by us). We accept credit cards and EFT.

Yet another option is www.bidorbuy.co.za - but then you carry the risk of it breaking / not arriving / having problems.
