I'm looking for a 3G modem that has an ethernet out.

Currently I'm using a cellphone plugged in via USB. Then sharing that connection with Windows sharing which goes to a router and to the rest of my network.

This get's a bit annoying at times, so I'm wanting to get a 3G modem to replace this setup.

It needn't be portable, nor does it have to have wi-fi built in.

Currently I'm looking at getting one of these (~R400), and then just buying a 3G Dongle (~R400). The problem is ensuring that the Dongle I get is suitable with the modem and the network I'm using (8ta in this instance).

Does anyone have any recommendations, or alternatives to look at?

those shoud be fine, and you only have to worry about the dongle if it's networked locked. i use 3g dongle (21mpbs) in a Asus router and have no problems...i actually get better speeds plugged into the router instead of the dongle plugged into the PC cause i placed the router in the window sill.

I have a TP-link 3g router at home - works like a charm. You shouldn't have any issues with that setup. You could always check the compatibility sheet to confirm which dongles it works with, but I don't foresee any issues. Also, network locking is illegal in SA so that shouldn't be a problem either.

As a registered Mybroadband member you could get a discount from Uniterm. For example the TP-Link MR3420 3G Wireless N Router @ R479.00, I was quoted at around R369-00. Also confirm with them which dongles are compatible with their modems. Although 3G dongles are not network locked, the service provider's firmware might be incompatible. Speak to the salespeople and they will send you a list of compatible SA dongles.

Thanks for the info everyone.

Magandroid, I'm most likely going to order online from uniterm, do I just tell them I'm a member on MyBB, is this a documented discount?

Thanks

Yes, when you order they'll send a quote. Just reply and ask for the MyBB discount and they'll resend the amended quote.
