Hi,

is 3G available on MTN Prepaid at the moment? and if so, does it need a "special" sim card? I've got a fried that has the Samsung Z130, with an old 16K sim card (prepaid), and is unable to get onto the 3G network. Also, the MTN sales people, say you can only get 3G on contract?

Any input will be great!

Its available on prepaid - I used my standard sim card no provisioning. Video calling you can configure via *123# (if I remember correctly) but you have to be in 3G coverage at the time.

ok, thanx, but what about the 16K sim? will that affect anything? is there any kind of "activation" to be done to get the 3G working? GPRS works fine!

3G works on contract and prepaid. You need to do *123*1# (and follow the prompts) to get activated for GPRS/EDGE/3G on prepaid. The SIM should not make any difference to the use of the service unless you are roaming.

just a guest appearance, mtnbb, or are you "back"? :)

What about prepaid data vouchers? - how much does it cost per MB, hopefully less than the R2 per MB that Vodacom are charging? Where can I get more info?

I believe the number is 141 , follow the prompts, you basically convert your existing airtime into a bundle. Costs same price as contract bundles [R100 for 100MB ..etc] , obviously will always be R2 p/mb "out of bundle".

actually, the out of bundle rate is only R2-00 per mb if you have the 10mb bundle.
the 100mb and 350mb out of bundle rate is R1-50, and the 1gb is R1-25.
according to the mtn website, at least... ;)

If I need less than 1GB or not sure how much data I need, I should go for the 350MB @ R220? I just need R220 or more prepaid credit and I call 141 to convert it into 350MB?
yup, or the 100mb for R100, depending on your needs, of course

I'll never pay R2.00 per MB for internet. It's rediculous. I'll use MTN 3G and EDGE for internet browsing if the price drop to at least R0.50 per MB.

Well the 1GB bundle is R500 ...there you go ;) .

Yes, the prices will be repeated to you when you call as well i.e "press 1 for a 100MB bundle at R100" etc. Happens instantly and when you call "*141#" you should get a message in the lines of "you have Rx voice minutes and xMB left on your bundle". Keep in mind you can only have 1 bundle per 30 days [i think?], you can't buy a new one before the bundle expires. So if you use it up before it expires then you go "out of bundle" and have to wait till the expiry date to buy a new one.

Although buying another prepaid sim bypass all the 30 day limitations mentioned above ;) [in case you got stuck with the wrong sized bundle].

Oh great stuff, this MTN prepaid thing is suddenly working out very cheap , starting to wonder what to do with my Vodacom 3G contract ;) .
