Hey guys,

Question as a foreigner here. My dad still does a lot of business in South Africa and travels there about once every three months. Most of his business these days is on an iPad... I just wanted to confirm that the iPad they sell here in Canada, which is the same one as the US, is compatible with 3G in South Africa and that he can get a micro SIM with data only from somewhere...

Any advice appreciated...

I know that Vodacom has already launched the micro SIM for iPad use. My guess is that it should work.

You can use a regular SIM card... Just cut it down to size around the chip part.

Tried and tested myself.

But yes, Vodacom has said they are releasing MicroSIM's, were just not exactly sure WHEN this will actually happen.

Yes, I am currently writing this on an iPad 3G 64GB using the 3G Vodacom network for data. I trimmed a regular sim card down to size, so it would fit, and it worked first time - like the others have said.

Is the network fast enough for accessing Dropbox and Gmail? How about Skype?

Damn you all, I'm very tempted. :( It doesn't seem to be locally available yet, right? Would like to feel one in my hands first.

Oh yeah. It's just as fast as regular 3G is here, which is fast! But pricey.

It's not locally available, no, except for special importers etc. But it does feel great in the hand! I can't wait to get one either. In fact I'm torn between the iPad and new iPhone!
