Greetings fellows,

I am new to both this forum and the 3G world, I just purchased the Sony Ericson Xperia handset and Im a little confused with the internet speed Im geting. On the Advert they say it can co up to 7.2 but all I get is:

Is this normal or is it me?

Thanks

While your phone will be capable of those speeds, our 3g networks are not unfortunately.

I can't comment on wether the speed you are getting is normal or not, my bet is that it will prolly pick up a bit this evening.

It's perfectly normal... for GPRS. Looks like you were not on 3G when you did the speedtest.

Thanks for the reply guys, I will give it another shot tonight maybe the Aliens were hijacking my signal last night.

Check your coverage as per Park@82 and it you are covered you should also run a test against the vodacom server: speed.vodacom.co.za and post the results here.

In my experience dedicated modems outperform cellphones, but you should still get an acceptable browsing speed out of it.

Also remember that by default you are limited to 3.6 on your profile. You need to buy an Advanced bundle if you want 7.2 speeds, but really you are not going to see 7.2 speeds on the advanced bundle. The only reason to get Advanced bundle is if you want better OOB rates.

PS. Welcome to MyBroadband :)

There is a white rectangular patch right where my house is when I zoom in on the map, but my neighbours are in red.

No wonder I have low signal

First time I checked out this map.

Is this the latest updated map?

What would cause the white rectangle?

See the image: 3G Coverage Blank spots

My house is where the Yellow marks are :(

The systems that draws the map uses an algorithm to determine the coverage area. Distance from tower, physical objects and other factors are taken into account and it tries to best work out what the coverage area is.

v3g has mentioned in the past that these maps are pretty accurate, but can sometimes err on the side of caution with the size of coverage. Getting an external antenna in an area on the edge or just outside the coverage area should improve your signal.

Where can I get an external antenna and what size would I need.

I get 2 Bars, sometimes 3 Bars but never saw full Bars yet, think the white spots could be causing this?

Dude, no jokes, I cannot for the life of me understand how VC can charge so much for a 1 gig bundle! My god! :(

People keep comparing cost of ADSL 1GB against cost of 1GB Data bundle without taking any of the Telkom costs into account. Up till recently it was actually more cost effective up till 3GB to use 3G than Telkom ADSL. The recent shake up from the likes of Afrihost in the ADSL market have changed this slightly, but for low usage it's still a good deal (when you look at ALL the costs).

Edit: ADSL comparison (currently out date - for illustration purposes): http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showphoto.php/photo/6318

Two hundred and something odd rand for 500mb's is just sheer daylight robbery imo! Corporate greed.com

As you say for low low use its ok, and handy when you're on the move, but still, get real, the costs are astronomical!

So do the math:

1GB
Telkom: Line Rental R131 + ADSL service (4mb) R413 + 1GB Data from Afrihost R29 = R573
Vodacom: 1GB Bundle R289 = R289

2GB
Telkom: R602
Vodacom: R389
