Hi guys,

Anyone know anything about 3 g radiation? UMTS is faster so will it be higher radiation than GSM/GPRS? Anyone?

Just received my external antenna for my 3g card>>thanks to Vodacom>>they delivered to my door via courier!!

The antenna has the ffg note ( on a small sticker ..) :

" Important information regarding RF exposure
To ensure compliance with Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment Directive 1999/5/EC at all times when connected to Vodafone Mobile Connect datacard type MCC UMTS, external antenna type Telsa T01111907 in operation, requires a minimum of 2.5cm seperation from the head and any part of the body "

THIS is worrying! When im using my 3 g phone it is against my ear! 2.5cm???

And the datacard: when it is plugged into my laptop ( my PCMCIA slot is on the right of my keyboard ) >>> my hand is basically ( my right palm ) 1/2cm away from the bulitin antenna while i type!!!! And no one warned me!

At least now ill use the external antenna and it is clipped onto my laptop screen and i assume the external antenna disables the internal one so no danger to my hand........

My question: By using 3g are we frying our brains and hands etc.............slowly??

RF radiation is not ionising (as in the radiation produced by radioactive decay) and so does not present a significant threat to a person's health.

Practical experimint:
Place egg white in thin plastic/syrafoam cup.
Place cup on probable transmission location.
Run communications for minimum of 6 minutes.
Any coocked egg white ?
Y = Baaaaad. Throw away and begin mass lawsuit.
N = Run communication for 1 hour and keep incrementing exponentially until some egg cooks. That should give you an effective minimum danger time.

P.S. Ever cooked an egg in a microwave. Fast hey ...

I do get occasional headaches when online for long ( 3g ) and occasional nausea

3G radiation health scare
September 30, 2003

A new study by the Dutch government shows that 3G radiowaves can cause more health problems than current 2G networks. The study shows that radiation from third generation base stations causes headaches and nausea while current mobile signals have little affect.

"If the test group was exposed to third generation base station signals there was a significant impact ... They felt tingling sensations, got headaches and felt nauseous," a spokeswoman for the Dutch Economics Ministry said.

The study also concluded both 3G signals and current mobile signals boosted cognitive functions such as memory and response.

The government will carry further test to see the long term health effects and biological issues and will also discuss the study with the European Commission.

Mobile handsets emit stronger radiation when they are in use but base stations can affect anyone within its transmission range.

The tests involved exposing unexpected test subjects to anticipated dose of radiation for 3G base stations when they are rollout.

Radio signals for 3G mobile phones can cause headaches and nausea, according to a survey conducted by three Dutch ministries on the impact of tomorrow's data networks on health.
The study, the first of its kind, tested the impact of radiation from base stations used for the current mobile telephone network, against those for new third generation (3G) networks for fast data transfer -- which will enable services such as video conferencing on a mobile device.

A base station, which usually covers a 'cell' area of several square kilometers, transmits signals to mobile phones with an electromagnetic field.

"If the test group was exposed to third generation base stations there was a significant impact.. They felt tingling sensations, got headaches and felt nauseous," a spokeswoman for the Economics Ministry said.

There was no negative impact from the signals for current mobile networks.

However, cognitive functions such as memory and response times were boosted by both 3G signals and the current ones, the study found. People become more alert when they were exposed to both.

The Dutch ministers responsible for Economic Affairs, Health and Telecommunications said follow-up research was needed to confirm the findings. They also said any longer-term health effects and biological causes needed to be looked at.

They will also discuss the study with the European Commission, the spokeswoman said. The double-blind laboratory tests -- meaning no-one in the survey knew if a base station was transmitting signals or not -- exposed test subjects to levels of radiation average for third generation networks when they become commercial in coming years.

The GSM Association, an organization of mobile telecommunications operators, was not immediately available to comment.

The study was conducted by the Dutch technological research institute TNO.

Anyone else experience headaches?

one thing a gotta say: The external antenna works wonders!
I dont have 3g where i live, however there is one tower a distance away>>i manged to log onto it with my phone when i climbed up onto my double story roof....now with this antenna, hooked onto my upstairs window, i got 3g: 2 bars and good speed...
regarding radiation: does anybody else seriously share my concern???or are all just happy with " enjoy today, suffer later " ?

There isn't really a threat from RF radiation using household appliances. That doesn't mean that there is no risk, but at the power levels used in home and personal devices the risk is insignificant.

If you want real RF radiation, ask a fighter pilot to point his fire control radar at you using full power. :p
