I have noticed many 3G USB modems come with a SD card slot, presumably so that it can be used as a flash drive as well? So, for instance, if this modem is used in a 3G router, would it be possible to use this SD card as as network drive? This would probably depend on the router software, but has anyone ever done this?

As you say, it would definitely depend on the router software, but if you were using something like OpenWRT or possibly DD-WRT, I see no reason why it should not be possible.
