3G Router with Ethernet ports

I have the exact issue that you have. I have a MBRN3000 router and the E367 8.ta dongle. I flashed the dongle with the firmware from MTN but now the question is what settings do I use when configuring the router? MTN or User defined? Under user defined what settings do I put in. I tried a mulitiple of things and still nothing. The modem works when connected to my pc.

I've got the Huawei B970 and it has two huge problems.

First is that if there is Eskom loadshedding and the power goes *poof*, the router reverts to its default settings = open wireless access with no passcode. Only thing I can do is to unplug it when I leave in the morning.

Second is that you can't go faster than 7.2Mbps (and there's NO way to make it faster!) and 8ta's towers can all do upto 21Mbps.

Much better to get the NetGear.

Seconded. Happened to us. We're not impressed with that [-]feature[/-]bug.

I also have one issue with the B970/B970b, and that its PPTP VPN passthrough is braindead.

I'm busy playing around with a D-Link DRW-555 and it looks good.

Sorted!!
The problem was with my sim card, it was on Voice. Apparently you have to call 8ta and ask them to convert it to data. It was roaming on the MTN data network.

Sorry to sound like a complete noob, but i have no idea how to flash my 8ta Dongle with MTN firmware! please can someone clear that up for me? i just want to set up my router so i can play some xbox

I was also worried about this for a while. I now have a TRENDnet TEW-655BR3G router (only one ethernet port, but I use WiFi), and it has a battery, so when the power trips, it still works for up to 3 hours

In addition a note: I didn't hear any hanging/disconnecting problems with routers which have internal battery.

If you're Linux savy and like experimenting, try the TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND 4xGbE, 1xWAN, WiFi-n, USB.
Out of the box (using TP-Link Software), the USB can only be used for NAS.
Load OpenWrt - and USB port can then be used to connect most USB "Speed-Sticks".
Otherwise the TP-Link MR3220 or MR3420 may be what you are looking for - 4xEthernet, USB, WiFi n.

Ultimately I would like to setup my Huawei E376 with the TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND as a 3G wireless router.

I'm not a Linux savy at all, but have tried to load OpenWRT on the TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND to no avail. I have downloaded the file, but just cannot get a .bin file executed on my Ubuntu 11.04 box. I constantly get the "bash: cannot execute binary file" error, although I have changed the permissions on the file etc. I have followed the instructions as per the Ubuntu forums, but to no avail.

I really want a router that can take my E367 and actually use its speed (sounds naive, I know). I have one from 8ta, and it works well in my PC and laptop, but want to centralise.
You say the WR1043 on OpenWRT can do it?
I currently run Tomato on a WRT54GL, so not a complete stranger to fiddling, but I want to know from someone who's done it - WR1043 wit E367 on 8ta.
Can you help?

Later that same year:
I got a Huawei B970b, the MTN flavour. Just stuck in the 8ta SIM and it works.
Had bad reception, stuck on a +6dB antenna (old D-link ANT24-0700).
Still got bad DL and UL, fretted, fussed, discovered I did not screw on antenna connector properly...
Now all I got is speed!
7.2Mbps DL and 5.7Mbps UL seems quite enough.
So I'm sorted!

If it so common, then look for a reason somewhere else, by example power at modem disposal. Modem has built in mechanism to reduce speed when power is insufficient. Source of instability or hangings.
