A customer of mine connects to the Internet using ADSL. Problem is his lines keep getting stolen so I came up with what I thought was a brilliant plan to help him through the loss in connectivity. A 3G/HSDPA router.

The router is installed and a MyMeg 500 contract taken out and he is surfing and downloading his mail but now come the problems.

How can I check my usage? Send an SMS to.....wait the SIM card is in the 3G/HSDPA card in the router.

Can I "easily" add topup bandwidth? It would appear no. You must phone through and do it telephonically. No online methods or automatic topups. And because you don't know your usage you wouldn't know when to phone anyway.

I was sure all of this "admin" was possible on the Vodacom4me/4u site but it would appear not. I haven't checked personally though because to setup Vodacom4me I need to receive an SMS.....wait the SIM card is in the 3G/HSDPA card in the router in Pretoria.

It is annoying when the technology works but the red tape doesn't.

????

U mean his Accounts?? or did u mean his line disconnects alot?

Anywho. 3G Router + 500mb bundle is not a good idea... Pricing per gig is too much. specially if your already paying the R245 or whatever ADSL line rentals. Rather get telkom out to sort the problem out. Or if u cannot get ADSL.. then i will say right.. go for the 3G router idea. or go for Iburst or something similar.

ADSL is still the best when it comes to stability and pricing per gig on international bandwidth.

Apart from taking the SIM card out of the data card slotted into the Linksys WRT54G3G router, your client could opt for [searchforum]DataSIM[/searchforum] to be added to the contract, which would provide an additional SIM card that can be used in a cellery phone linked to the same contract and the same active data bundle(s), as well as the ability to use *111# USSD commands for data bundle management & receiving data usage SMSes...

To clarify: The card and the package belong to me. I rent it out to clients when they have no fixed line connectivity and regardless of the package used I just want an easy and simple method of checking usage and adding topups.

If you have used the Web Africa ADSL service you will know what I mean. What I can't understand is why these seemingly huge companies (Vodacom) with massive resources cannot get the systems right when smaller companies (not calling you small WA;)) can.

Well in that case, consider getting [searchforum]DataSIM[/searchforum] added to your own contract - it would allow you to remotely manage the data usage of the SIM card in the router...
