3g vs WiFi

I was wondering... if a phone (WinMo) has wifi and 3g enabled, and the wifi connection has internet connectivity available, which connection will the phone use for its data? Will it tunnel through the WiFi to the internet or will it still use 3g connection?

At home I have a wireless router, so when I am at home I would prefer the phone to use wifi since its bit cheaper than cellular data rates.

I don't know the general answer, but my HTC HD2 had to be "told" to prefer WiFi over 3G ... now it does it seamlessly. Can't remember the actual steps tho' (I did a LOT of fiddling the 1st few days )

What phone do you have? What WinMo version?

Ah ... remembered ... look for WMLongLife .... little app configures your Connections & saves battery big-time.
