3G - who is ahead?

LINDSAY WILLIAMS: Where do we stand now in terms of 3G with MTN versus Vodacom - who is ahead at the moment?

ARTHUR GOLDSTUCK: It’s fairly clear that Vodacom has cleaned up the market as far as 3G is concerned - you see their little red 3G cards sticking out of laptops wherever you go.

More importantly

ARTHUR GOLDSTUCK: The problem is that 3G is the most expensive form of broadband that you can possibly get - for a typical R350 contract there’s a cap of about 500 megabits, which is not a lot. If you look at the ADSL equivalent, at around the same price you’re getting something like three gigabytes of data downloads, so you could say it’s almost five or six times more expensive than ADSL in terms of the data that you’re downloading.

If mtn wants the market they just need to be competitively priced with adsl not vodacom.
