Firstly, please don't quote me on this as I'm am not to sure but am pretty confident.

I tried this yesterday and worked.

I have figured that telkom apply caps at the end of the day when they do their 24 hour reset. therefore if you have not exceeded you cap by the last day of the month, you can theoretical download well past your cap.

I tried it last night, I had 200 megs free and downloaded 1.8 gigs. I downloaded all the crap i could find just to prove my point.
 
Glad you had fun downloading yesterday. I've been doing that for 2 years now. Most everyone else does as well. I think things will be changing once the new billing system is in place.
 
well when i was with mweb on the in the last 2 month i figured that out download in those 2 months over 12 gigs

i just went to games.saix.net and loaded up all the kuk i could find
then deleted most of it


but that was when they didnt cut you off so i was connect for something like 40 hours
but now they reset the ip at 12

I don't know what's going on with P2P. When I first got ADSL I couldn't figure out why everybody was complaining about the shaping. I was getting full speed on my connection. After a few months it got slower, but still worked. Then my torrents started giving a problem. Currently my P2P is basically unusable, I can't even get an MP3.

LimeWire seems to be limited to 2kB/s, even when there's 100's of sources available. Torrents seem to be limited to 7kB/s during the day, and each individual connection to another peer seems to be limited to 1kB/s each. Most of the time my torrents won't go past 5kB/s, even with many seeds available.

After 12 at night the speed improves dramatically. Between 12 at night and 5 in the morning I can generally get an average speed of 15kB/s (I'm on 192), but still not the full speed I used to be able to get.

I've seen many other people on the forum complain about P2P recently, but many others seem to be unaffected. I hate Telkom.
 
well firstly limewire is slow its an issue they have because they use java

for me torrents have never worked so i dont know what everyone goes on about how great they are

its not telkom they have changed nothing

but use something decent like edonkey or bearshare not this limewire rubbish
 
limewire, kazaa, torrents and stuff i started getting almost dial-up speeds on them. i too used to be able to get quite high speeds, its just recently. there's definately shaping going on somehow, and it seems to be getting worse.

Bearshare is the only thing that still works at full speed. only thing is the data rate they give you is in kbps and not KB/s, but thats no biggie - just divide by 8. otherwise it works perfectly at full speed.

I'm sure neither me or Byrd are idiots. LimeWire worked fine for me, I was able to download at 20kB/s from it not 2 months ago. It's definitely bandwidth shaping, it's easy to spot. All I want to know is why it only affects certain people. For me it started to get unusable about a week or two ago. Bittorrent, DC++, LimeWire, Overnet, eDonkey... all useless.

EDIT: Just tried BearShare - I get between 17 and 74kbps. Also unusable.

Its very sporadic, just me connecting to my overseas webspace is a nightmare sometimes. I dont change any settings, one day its ok the next day,same time, its useless. Its not the server overseas either its just Telkom.

As far as i know the way the shaping at telkom is done is if 2 requests go through at the same time and one is port 80 (http) and the other is 6881 (Torrent port) the port 80 request will get priority. So that makes sense that your torrents speed up late at night as with the amount of traffic your torrents can tick away happily.

Being the end of the month the whoring gets over board, alot of that is HTML and FTP downlaoding which is higher priority than p2p and torrent so your requests get shifted to the bottom and you won't get good speeds.

I could very easily be wrong here so don't hold it against me, Telkom is very secretive over contention ratios and throttling and prioity, only saying the http, ftp, pop and smtp gets priority

so you may not be an idiot but you sure havent tried edonkey

overnet and edonkey are the same thing edonkey uses overnet
but if you have found a program called overnet send me the link please

and shaping wont affect different ppl everyone uses saix well majority of us
and most of the isp's use telkom. so if you speed is slow everyone else's should be.

also alot of ppl on p2p are setting low bw download with programs like du controller where you set your download unlimited and upload to 1kb.

P2P has gone to ***, woe is me. Weird thing is im on Mweb and yesterday while still battling with limewire, which had given me 35Kb in the past, and was now giving me 1Kb sometimes. Ok thats not wierd what was weird was i phoned my friend and he was also on limewire also on an mweb account and he was getting 15-17Kb. How do you explain such a big discrepancy, both files had well over 100 sources
 
No problems with P2P, works well.. I am using Bearshare..

Like most of you I am sure notice if you leave your download and watch it it looks worse than watching paint dry..

try walk away believe me it speeds up!!!

Yes, Overnet and Edonkey use the same network, but there WAS in fact two programs. One called Overnet and one called Edonkey. The two have now been merged, but I tried both anyway. You requested a link, here you go smartass: http://www.mp3machine.com/software/Overnet/

Shaping rules can not only differ from ISP to ISP, but also from account type to account type and if they want to it can be applied to individual accounts. It doesn't matter what anybody else tells you, this can be done, I know because I've actually worked with it. The fact is several people here have been experiencing dramatic decreases in their P2P speed for the last 2 weeks, weather you have or not is irrelevant.

I actually work with computers for a living. I think I'd be able to figure out eDonkey. I'm oh so glad for you that you experience no P2P problems, but to act like everyone else here that does are stupid is just sad. Killadood, no offense but you're an idiot. Don't shoot your mouth off at stuff you know nothing about.
 
Torrents seem almost like they are shaped beyond belief, im maxing at 6kb with hundreds of seeds,
 
I am experiencing this on my telkom account.

I will have a go with the WA account and another telkom account I have at work over the next few days and see if there is any difference.

If telkom is able to single out users and apply different prioritisation schemes to them this could be what is going one. My monthly average for the psast year has been about 100gb per month

In december I was able to pull just over 60Gigs internationaly.

Killaboob - I have tried all sorts of protocols over the past few months. If there was something on myside - I am sure I would have figured it out by now.

PS - how is your dad's Axxess account compared to AYCE :D

im with dj_sam on this one. bearshare is the only thing that still works for me, the others have slowed to dial-up speeds. the download initially starts off slowly, but trust me it speeds up as it connects to more sources.
 
Yeh bearshare works well. i usually just click a download @ night and the next mornin its there.
