Hi,
Could someone tell me under what conditions should a car be put under 3rd party car insurance(+fire & theft)?

I bought my polo 1.4 cash last year and since then i've had it under comprehensive insurance. Should i change to 3rd party since my vehicle is paid off?

Thanks.

I just changed my cover today as well. I did because the vehicle is paid off and secondly because the car is easy to fix, parts are cheap, etc. I also don't mind the loss that I might incur when the vehicle is involved in an accident.

If your car is worth less than R30k, then comprehensive is a waste of money. If its between R30k and R50k, then maybe. If more then comprehensive is worth it. Santam's rate for comprehensive for a car valued at R 90k is not much more than balance of third party, fire and theft

Suppose that im invloved in an accident with a 500k mercedes. Does it matter whose fault the accident was? Im assuming that my 3rd party insurance with fully cover the damage to the merc. Wont the insurance company of the merc cover the damage to my car?

3rd party covers the other person's vehicle damage if you were at fault.
It will not cover your own damage whether it was your fault or not.

Only if it was the Merc driver's fault.
If it was your fault then you pay for your own damage and your insurance covers his/her damage.

and this.

I have an old mini and was quoted R300 odd rand/pm for comprehensive insurance with a payout of R3k max. I took 3rd party at R100.
