40 VDSL Download Speed?

Hi All,

I recently just upgraded to a 40MB VDSL line and would like to find out what download rates you are getting?

I did a speedtest and it showed a connection speed of 38MB which is great however when downloading a file I was only getting 1.3MB's/sec - I was expecting to get about 4MB's/sec with a 40mb line or am I wrong?

Let me know what kind of download speeds you guys are getting on a 40MB line.

It could possibly be that the server you were downloading from had a maximum upload speed of 1.38MB/s but yes you should have about 5MB/s if your copper is good. Unfortunately not many people can show there's because not many people have 40Mb lines so it may take a while for you to get a response.
 
Its all dependent on the server that you are downloading from.
You should try and pull something from mirror.ac.za afaik its got pretty high upload speeds to test.
 
Yeah and if its still low try using a download manager. If its still low after that then something is wrong......

Yep, depends where you are downloading from. Just remember that the distance to the server will also affect your throughput that is why you will find downloading from local servers will generally be a lot quicker than downloading from servers overseas.

EDIT: Yes, as above when trying to download something, use a download manager that can download multiple threads simultaneously. This will help.

EDIT: I can get up to 2MB/sec on my 20Mbit VDSL on international links but when using multiple threads.

Thanks for the response guys :)

I did tests as your suggested and used a download manager with a local FTP site.

I can say I was downloading at 3.8mbs/sec locally :) :)

As for International downloads I still need to test however I see the international downloads aren't that great and also depends on the ISP me thinks.

how much do u pay in total?

for the 40mbps and data?

Another reason the international Speedtests are skewed is because the Speedtest doesn't provide a large enough test sample. It tries to chose the best download size for you but because it sometimes take a few seconds for all the parts to "get through the pipes" it choses a download sample that is too small.

If it's too small then there isn't enough time for the test to get to the maximum speed, hence your international Speedtest will actually be worse than a real multipart download.
