Johannesburg - Forty-three pupils were arrested on Tuesday for stoning a headmaster and police officers at Mohlakeng near Randfontein, West Rand police said.

Captain Joseph Mogoai said a number of pupils from Thutolehakoe and Phahama high schools were on their way to a march organised by the Congress of SA Students (Cosas) in Johannesburg.

The pupils entered AB Phokompe High School, also in Mohlakeng, where they disrupted classes and demanded that the pupils at the school join them.

Mogoai said when the pupils and the principal refused, the protesting pupils started throwing stones at them.

Police were called in, but the pupils continued throwing stones, injuring one officer and damaging two police vehicles.

Police used rubber bullets to disperse the crowd and arrested 43 pupils.

In Johannesburg, about 5000 pupils led by Cosas marched through the city centre, demanding that recovery plans be implemented after the public service strike. A memorandum of demands was handed to the department of education in Commissioner Street.

The president of Cosas, Kenny Motshegoa, said: "Pupils are fearful that if they do not get any form of extra work done, then they might fail at the end of the year.

"An immense amount of work still needs to be done," he said.

The pupils took to the streets at 10:00 and marched through Commissioner, Harrison, Wolmarans and De Villiers Streets before handing in the memorandum.

"The students need some sort of extraordinary commitment by the department, that something will be done soon," said Motshegoa.

The department of education could not be reached for comment.

These children claim they lost a month of schooling, I did not attend school for 5 years and managed to catch up. I skipped grades 3 to 9. In my first term back in school I was one of the top 10 pupils and I was 4th in matric. I further went to an English school even though my first language is Afrikaans. It can be done through hard work.

These kids should be in school studying, instead they strike about the consequences of another strike and lose more school time.

I think these kids are just lazy, they don't care and see the month they lost as an excuse to do nothing and to force the government to pass them no matter what.

I agree that they're just looking an excuse to get a freebie pass on their matric.
 
um.. my school was also affected by the strike.. ive finished all my Syllabuses and only have to go back after pre-lims to see what i got and stuff.

So they just want a free pass.. yes we had to work harder and do more homework.. but we managed just fine..

Bcom financial accounting. Bsc IT. CIMA managerial is my highest qualification. I received my degrees from a real university, Potchefstroom, where striking during exams does not earn you a pass.
 
I believe it's now called North-West University... :)

And actually I've heard more horror stories of forced passes there than any other university.

How do you end up with two undergraduate degrees ?
 
And to think they've already dropped the standard of education and pass rate so a "new" pupils could actually pass.

Sadly North-West. I know they force pass people who meet a certain criteria, they have to be black and previously disadvantaged. PUK can not change such policies.
50% of people need to pass before the government subsidises the said students. In my accounting classes, especially audit, I think 30% actually passed though.

I worked hard, these kids are lazy and want handouts. I used myself as an example, as I missed much more school than just 1 month.

My sister skipped grade 11, she wrote matric papers at an embassy, after 200 km drives which took 4 hours to complete one way. She passed all her subjects, 5 As and 79.5 percent for the 6th. She had no teachers, only the textbooks she received a month before the final exams started.

These kids don't really think 1 month is that much, am willing to bet they don't go to class, even if the teachers are there.

I agree with the principles of what you are saying, I just don't think that self-congratulating is the best way of winning converts to your argument.
 
I am proud of what I accomplished and I will be outspoken when kids act the way these do.

Started working as a student last year, will make more money once I can write experience on my CV also.
 
My suspicion is that a lot of the pupils who engage in these protests were never going to pass their exams anyhow, and use this as an excuse to 'gain' extra time or concessions.
