Which would you go for bearing in mind price-performance? Im leaning towards the 4890 as it goes for R2734 at pcint and xfire 4770S cost R3300. Will be gaming at 1920x1080

Well according to local price it'll be the 4890

And you can always get another one to Xfire later.

You better have a strong psu though

Whats the diff between sli and xfire?

well the biggest difference is with SLI you have to use two of the same Models eg: an 9800GT + 9800GT and with X-fire you don't have to - you can use a 4870 and a 4850 if you wanted to.

Actually, the 4770 comes close to the 4850 on it's own. The 4770 crossfire is much faster than a 4890, beating even a GTX 285!

So ya, if you can get it cheap...

Correct

SLI - two of the same
Hybrid SLI - two diff Nvidia card 8 series or later

Crossfire - two same ATI card
Crossfire-X - difference ATI cards HD4xxx series or later

Didnt research this so could be mistaken :P

I don't know how 2 of these cards would not beat a 4890 in all honesty, makes no logical sense to me.

It's simple. 2 4850's would beat a 4890 by a long margin right? So the 4770 X 2 is still faster. A 4770 is nearly as fast as a 4850. It's basically as fast as a 4830. So 2 of them are still faster than a 4890. Pretty cool! They have a 128-bit bus, but the bandwidth is still great thanks to GDDR5. And because they're 40nm they are light on power consumption and OC pretty well, but then, so does the 4890!
HD 4770 CrossFire has outperformed HD 4890 by nearly 20%, with fewest difference under Left 4 Dead.

But 4770's are still a little pricey here...A single card is better value until they drop in price. In the states they are $100 - $110!

Afaik Crossfire and Crossfire X are on in the same only difference is that the latter states to take 4 ATI cards whilst "Crossfire" can only take 2 ATI at a time, just seems like corporate hogwash to me.

Hybrid sli is when you sli on board graphics with a low end graphics card.

For high res gaming i'd choose the 4890.
