4G fallback for 5G during power outages

Finally! Just got a mail from Rain:

Your 5G router now has the ability to switch automatically to our 4G network. This will only happen if your nearest 5G tower becomes unavailable in event of extended power outages.

Your router will automatically reconnect to the 5G network as soon as your tower is back up again.

Extended power outages may be caused by municipal power failures, long periods of loadshedding or the theft of backup batteries from our 5G towers. We have teams working to solve these issues as soon as they arise.

To find out the status of your 5G network, check for updates on your myrain app.

This is a nice change @rain_mobile @rain_networks. Hopefully the 4G congestion has eased up a bit. Will be testing this next load shedding window.
 
Yes when you login there is a popup also.

Durban. My 5G dies like clockwork with load shedding but I remember the 4G towers used to remain on. @rain_mobile is there any special APN or setting needed? Or will my router just fallback to 4G? NSA? SA+NSA?
 
Manually switch to "4G only" on your router and you will see it works fine. 4G speeds are terrible in peak time. I definitely don't miss 4G.

The funny thing with the RAIN message is it makes it sound like they enabled something special on your router to make it work. The reality is lots of people would have forced their router to 5G only (no fallback) since 4G was disabled for 5G users a long time ago anyway.
 
Somehow my router is getting weaker 4G reception than 5G and it is unusable so... thanks, I guess?
 
@rain_mobile my router is now permanently on 4G:

I like this 4G fallback, but my 5G signal is quite weak, so perhaps the router is choosing the 4G network which has much better signal, even when 5G is up? I don't want to pay 5G prices for 4G.
 
OK I rebooted it and it reconnected to 5G. If it falls back to 4G, will it reconnect to 5G when that is available again or does it stay connected to 4G? Perhaps there is a setting I'm missing here, I'm using the Huawei H112-372.
 
Have the same issue, it seems to go back to 4G sporadically even when there is no load shedding. I'm concerned what will happen during a gaming session... Do we have a 5G preferred option on our routers? I have a external CPE router.

Hi Jbroo, the switch back to 5G can take a few minutes, a manual reboot will make this quicker. If you feel you are stuck on 4G let us know and we will check it closely.

Oh … now I see why the internet on my side was that weak yesterday I’ll also have a look at this …

Most people might forget to check if the router has switched back to 5G network again after loadshedding and then get only get 4G network speeds while they are paying for 5G until they restart the router. On the ZTE CPE router there is an option of choosing to just connect to the 5G SA option only which should suffice for most people concerned about this.
