Good day,

I need a temporary internet solution till my fibre from @Frogfoot Fibre gets installed, waiting for a call for installation. Where i stayed before in JHB i had 5G so i have the 5G router.

Now there is no 5G in Cape Town but i was wondering has anyone testing running a Rain 4G sim in the 5G router? I wanted to grab the all day uncapped option from rain till my fibre gets installed and run it in the 5G router?

I dont see it being a problem, but hey you never know, so just wanted to know if anyone has tested this yet and if it worked?

EDIT: I have the H112-370 model

There's 5G in Cape Town. Don't know why you think there wouldn't be. Not all areas but if you're covered by Frogfoot then you should have 5G signal. Is Rain 5G tower-locked?

I'm under the impression that these 5G modems don't do a 4G-fallback as per Rain's configuration (I think the hardware itself probably can but Rain won't allow it on their network.) I stand under correction.

If you don't want to activate the 5G, you'd probably get more luck just putting a 4G sim in your phone and tethering it to your computer. (Android phones can even act as a fallback connection for some fibre routers that have USB ports.) That's what I'd do in your situation.

I have fibre in my road the previous tenant took the hard ware for the fibre so they need to do an installation. According to rains map there is no 5G at my address.

So while I wait for Frogfoot to give me an installation date I need a internet solution.

All I wanted to know is if someone has tested a 4G sim on the 5G router and if it works

Seeing as I have access to fibre id rather have fiber that 5G due to the reliability. I had to jam my 5G router into a window bar at the old place to get a decent speed. Don't want to deal with that nonsense again so fibre it is

Nope, I paid for it myself, when Rain 5g started you had to buy the router
No I bought it before 5G became public. I had to pay i think 2500. I have canceled and already confirmed this with Rain

Yes it will work great as the 5G router can also aggregate rain's two 4G bands which other routers like the B618 can't do. You just can't use your 5G sim as they'll block it but you can get yourself a 4G sim from takealot and the likes. Beware of the streaming limitations on the all day uncapped 4G though if you are not planning on using a VPN (360p)

EDIT: I see it has that damn * stating 360p, i mean who TF wants to see 360p these days

No one! Use a VPN to bypass the speed and streaming throttling by rain...

a little OT but its my thread so its cool! what VPN you suggest?
I have fibre at home so no need for me to use VPN. I just read in another thread (try rain launches uncapped @ R479pm) that by using a VPN the speed limit (10mbps) and the 360p throttling gets bypassed but personally I have no experience with this. Good luck!

Seems I was wrong about the 5G modem not handling 4G. Cool to know that it can do that.

I guess what I misunderstood was that if you put a 5G sim in, then it wouldn't fall back to 4G if there's no 5G connection.

um thanks....?

The question was will the 5G router support lte, posting the spec list helps validate what people said. Rain uses B3 1800 MHz and B38 2600 MHz bands both bands is support by the router.
