What do you guys recommend the best approach (trying to keep cost down) for upgrading a DDR2-800 2GB machine to 4GB where it currently has 2x1GB installed and two slots free? Do I buy 2x1GB or one 2GB module? Or do I flog the 2x1GB and buy 2x2GB?

Get 2x 1GB if you want the maximum performance. Otherwise you can always install both 2x 1GB + 2x 2GB :)

You can always try to buy them (2x 1GB pairs) 2nd-hand, because I'm pretty sure there are people out there who wanted to upgrade from 2x 1GB where their motherboard only has 2 slots. I know my office has quite a few PC's like that and we're busy upgrading them to 2x 2GB, so we'll have 2x 1GB modules lying around...
