4mb/10mb ADSL Line

If I request a 4mb line from telkom - will they give me a line "restricted to 4mb"
They advertise 4-10mb as a single price - wondering if theres any advantage to having a 4mb ISP account on a 10mb ADSL line.

If you run a 4meg account on a 10meg line your ISP will most likely only 'allow' 4meg speeds. I know some people report that they can get upwards of 150% of the speed they're signed up for though.

1) No, DSL Fastest supports uncapped accounts from 4Mbps up 10Mbps, your speed is determined by the speed of the account, running a 10Mbps uncapped account on a DSL Fastest line that can only achieve 6Mbps (like mine) is probably a waste of money. All capped accounts should run at the best speed achievable.

2) Yes, it will run at close to a true 4Mbps. If your DSL Fastest line can only achieve 4Mbps though you would loose out to the tune of +/- 15% on traffic overheads.

I hear so too - hence - If I request 4mb from telkom - do they automatically set it to maximum as the price is the same. On telkoms site its describes as "fastest 4/10mb"

1. Just request 4MB. Then look at your line stats to see if faster is even viable.

2. Normally a 4MB account on a 4MB line gets you 3.6MB real world speeds. Running 4MB account on a 10MB line will give you 4MB real world speeds. Depending on the ISP though this can burst to 6MB.

My 4MB account runs at 6MB speeds for example.

3. Openweb have an affordable 6MB account.

It depends on your data account but you will expirence faster speeds if your on a 10 meg lin using a 4mb account

Lets be clear, if you get/pay for a 4mb line, telkom 'may' grant you 2mb of that, periodically, depending on their mood.
More often than not while normal people are awake, they wont, but if you use your interwebz at say 0300 in the morning, maybe.

My exchange can only handle 4mb. That sux since it costs the same for a 10mb line.

I have a 4Mb Telkom ISP account, my line sync on the router has the new vdsl speed, 22mb download and 1.5mb upload. I get close to 8mb download on speed test with a 1mb upload. These speeds are great for video streaming Netflix and Hulu.
