4mb Line Issue....

Uh, wait... is IS the line provider? (like telkom?) and Nexus the ISP? cause I've never heard of either of them in my life.

Hehe, noob question, i know

What are your line statistics? Specifically, noise margin and line attenuation. Also, if your router reports errors (e.g. CRC, LOF, LOS, etc.) post those as well.

IS = Internet Solutions. It's an Internet Access Provider (I think that's the correct term - think of it as an "ISP for ISPs"). It competes with SAIX, which is essentially Telkom. The line provider is almost always Telkom, although these days you can pay your ISP your DSL line rental.

It boils down to this: IS provides satellite-based international connectivity (e.g. the Uncapped Express Accounts) as well as fibre-based international connectivity (which is the IS Fibre Semi-shaped product I mentioned to you). SAIX provides fibre-based international connectivity (which can be shaped or unshaped).

Nexus is an ISP, just like WebOnline, your current ISP. However, they offer a monthly/capped account of the IS Fibre Semi-shaped kind, which in my opinion, is far superior to SAIX shaped accounts (which is probably what WebOnline provides you with), although R11 (or thereabouts) more expensive per GB than SAIX.

If you want to try IS Fibre Semi-shaped to see if it solves your problems, you can purchase 1GB prepaid for R89 from Axxess.

I think i've decided what i'm going to do.

I have a 5GB shaped WebOnline account (SAIX) which costs R299.00 a month.
I can get a Nexus 5GB semi-shaped account (IS) for R299.00 a month

I think the better choice is quite obvious...

Just 2 more quick questions... If I do switch to Nexus, will i still pay Telkom R413 a month for the 4mb line? That part (the Telkom bill) stays the same no matter what uplink provider (SAIX or IS) your ISP uses right?

And, If I go for the Nexus 5GB ISDSL+ account will I be able to use that bandwidth at 4mb speeds? or will i need to pay extra?

Before I answer your questions, I must again caution you - I cannot say whether this will in fact solve your problem. You should probably try the prepaid bandwidth option first to see if it fixes the issue.

Yes, correct. Your ISP choice is completely independent of your line rental to Telkom. You can choose whichever ISP you want (and however many you want) without any issues.

No extra cost involved. The beauty of purchasing bandwidth (besides those uncapped accounts) is that it is not speed limited. Theoretically, you should be able to achieve line-speed with any bandwidth.

thanks for all your advice ;)

I understand that there is a possibility of it not solving my problem, but it doesn't really matter anyway because it's not going to cost me anymore per month.

Cool. FYI, Nexus is not your only choice; OpenWeb also offers IS Fibre Semi-shaped (and at the same prices).

Hmm. To be honest with you, I don't see how your issue could have been port forwarding. You had a green status icon in uTorrent which means it was connecting fine. I think it's more likely an ISP/shaping/connectivity/intermittent issue.

I'm glad you sorted it out. But keep the IS Fibre Semi-shaped in mind. It blows SAIX shaped out of the water ;)
