i saw a thread some time ago and looks like this is still a problem , my 4mb lines is not downloading more than 60-70kb/s and on speedtest.net its showing at about 1.1mb line but on my router its syncing at 4mb , how did you guys fix this the last time it happend?

I suspect it might be your exchange/DSLAM. I called Telkom, they sent out a technician to check my line and the exchange (which was going at about 2,500-2,700kbps), he said there's definitely something wrong with it, got people to check it out, and then I got a text saying that the fault has been resolved. It hasn't.

If you find a way to get them to fix it, give me a shout.

damm so you still have this problem?

Officially, no. The nonsense I kept being told was that "Telkom does not guarantee a speed of 4mbps." Realistically, yes, I still have the same problem. Even the tech agrees that there's something wrong with the DSLAM I'm connected to, but eh, according to Telkom my fault has been fixed and cleared.

I honestly don't feel like going through the process of whining until they send someone along again just to get told the same rubbish, so I'm pretending everything's fine.

What is your speed if you do the speed test @ www.openweb.co.za?

From Openweb.co.za:

Your current bandwidth reading is:

3.09 Mbps

which means you can download at 395.41 KB/sec. from our servers

Same problem (speedwise) as Matrix though...

Your current bandwidth reading is:

3.39 Mbps

which means you can download at 433.96 KB/sec. from our servers.

This is pretty close to what I get using Free Download Manager.

I found downloading using a single thread (standard ie) resulted in rates way below the above. I'm speculating here, but it may be that there is some inefficiency (throttling) somewhere along the line.
Free Download MAnager opens multiple download threads, utilising pretty much the reported full bandwidth of your local link.

Give it a try and let us know.

When I had this problem a few months ago, I consistently called Telkom and emphasized the point that "I used to be able to download at 400+KB/sec but now I'm only getting 50-60KB/sec" eventually they got the fact that I was having problems with my "Transfer Speeds" and sent a techie out.

She was very nice to me and spoke to me over the phone whilst she fiddled around with the exchange until my speeds came right. :)

My line now syncs at 4012/512 and things are great so far

Yes, I had the same problem, my line was also sinking at 4mb, but still only getting 512k speeds.

Before they fixed my line I was syncing at 4096/384 but only getting 40-60KB/sec downloads.
After they fixed I was at 4096/512 and all was fine. :)

I cannot be sure if that is all they changed, but apart from getting 4mb speeds again, that was the only notable difference I could see my line. ;)
