My line has been running fine for the last month, until late last week. The modem would sync at 4096/512 down/up respectively.

Since late last week, the modem shows the following:

SNR Margin (dB) Down: 10.8
SNR Margin (dB) Up: 12.0

Attenuation (dB) Down: 54.0
Attenuation (dB) Up: 30.5

Output Power (dBm) Down: 10.4
Output Power (dBm) Up: 18.8

Attainable Rate (Kbps) Down: 3296
Attainable Rate (Kbps) Up: 844

Rate (Kbps) Down: 2048
Rate (Kbps) Up: 512

It will not sync above 2048/512 and it shows the highest attainable rate as 3296/844 ???

Telkom have tested the line and said all is ok.
My ISP has checked the account and says it's fine - no throttling on the line.
I've checked all the plugs and connections.
Voice line is crystal clear - no audible noise noticed.

So, question is, where to next? Beginning of last week it sync'd at 4096/512, this week, not...

I understand that your SNR margin is not very good, from what I can understand of the various SNR discussion threads on this forum.

That might be a culprit?

But as for what to do next, hope you can resolve the matter. Maybe some of the other forumites who've suffered a drop in speed will be able to tell you something.

my line has also started acting funny... up until 2 weeks ago my 4meg line had a snr of 20+, but suddenly it only syncs at 2meg or less and even then my snr is below 10.

a telkom techie came to look and he said it's a known new issue from the dslam to my exchange or something like that, and that everyone in my area is experiencing the same issue.

goodness knows when they'll fix it though. so maybe you're having the same issue? i live in radiokop, pretty close to randburg.

Your margin and attenuation is very bad and your router correctly reports that syncing at 4mb with those margins would not be possible. This normally indicates that you are too far from the exchange, there is a fault somewhere between your router and the exchange or a fault at the exchange itself. Since its very recent, most likely a fault in the telephone line or at the exchange, but don't rule out the line at your house getting damaged.

Many thanks for the replies. I've logged a call for a techie to come and take a look - they just did another line test and say that the line can only sync at 3552 - strange that it was up at 4096 last week though, so will wait for the techie to test. They have manage to get it stable at 3072 for now so will update after the on-site tests. ;)
