I have been having very inconsistent speeds with my 4mb uncapped account from Mweb (Line is rented from Telkom). Every time I call Telkom to query this, they always log a fault and it takes about 2 - 4 days before I receive an sms stating that my fault has been restored and as far as I know all they do is reset my ports. This seems to fix the speed issues for about 1 - 2 days and then the slow speeds, high pings, etc come back.

I mainly use my internet for online gaming and downloading. This problem has been going on for months, I'm not sure if I should get a new router (I currently use the Telkom Mega 105WR) or if I should change ISP. I don't know if there is an actual problem with my line or if it's congestion problems at the exchange but I get inconsistant speeds throughout most of my day even late at night/early in the morning.

When I run a Speed Test I get:
Last Result:
Download Speed: 287 kbps (35.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 404 kbps (50.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 86 ms

Anything else you might need just ask, I don't know much about Line Attenuation or SNR Margins so if you do need those figures, please just tell me what to do or where to go. Thanks very much in advance.

Describe the pattern does happen at night and does it improve after midnight?

Most likely bad line stats - You will need to log into your router and get your line stats. You might need to ask Telkom to drop your line speed and see if it improves things.

Please could you drop me a PM with your account info.

Your line attenuation is excellent - do you live on top of the exchange :)

You shouldn't have any problems syncing at 4Mbps. Have you checked your pots filter? Do you have another adsl router you can try?

If you download a local file from say www.mirror.ac.za do you get full speed?

I don't have another adsl router and I'm not too sure what a pots filter is.

I downloaded a file from the link you sent me and I got an average download speed of roughly 120KB/s.

I just checked and I do in fact have a pots filter installed on my line, I am going to buy a new one tomorrow in case it is faulty and I will let you know how that goes tomorrow.
Thanks again.

Try and disconnect all phones/faxes etc and only have your ADSL modem connected. You can test it without the filter then.

I disconnected all my phones and tested my internet without the filter and it unfortunately made no difference, my pings to www.mweb.co.za are still very high and inconsistent.

I have the same problem with all 4 of my ADSL 4meg lines!

I have logged so many faults and they just get closed..... so I have given up...

Telkom are the height of useless....

Line sync, no problems (according to them)... That is what happens when you have pure stupid Tech's @ Telkom...

If anyone was wondering, the reason my speeds are so bad is because my line keeps dropping due to high line congestion in my area. Basically I will never have a proper 4mb connection unless Telkom decides to upgrade the lines in our area :(
